I'm NOT a 99 Percenter!

I just can't understand why the socialistic outfits are allowed to continually use the term '99 Percenters' with impunity. To be honest I have only met one of these jokers face to face and he wanted to include me in his troop with that number. I called him on it.

I also asked him, since both the American Nazi Party (AKA National Socialist party) and the Communist Party USA were both backing the Occupy movement, which group he belonged to and was paying him for his work. I finally had to assume that he was a college 'student' and his parents were supporting him. He wouldn't answer me as to where his financing came from. He probably didn't know.

Anyway, What started this tirade is I get email messages from Katrina vanden Heuvel,
Editor & Publisher of The Nation magazine, a socialist rag that continually begs for 'Mo Money' and she had the audacity to write, "We were thrilled to see the emergence of the Occupy Wall Street movement right here in our backyard of downtown Manhattan. While the mainstream media initially reacted with snark and cynicism, The Nation was quick to recognize the power and appeal of this uprising of the 99 percent."

Now she has to realize that the 99% refers to only those who are not uber-rich and the 1% are the uber-rich. She also MUST know that NOT all of the 99% that are NOT part of the top 1% with big bucks in their pocket are in favor of the occupy whatever group. I'm not for one and of all my friends (few though they be) there might be a couple that favor the movement. Sure not many But whether a few or a lot the number, 99%, is a lie!... SO she is LYING when she uses that number and is doing so in order to get money. After all, the little letter said nothing of value to anyone. All it said was how wonderful The Nation Magazine is and to send them money.

Oh well... What did I expect. I am on their email list voluntarily. I thought to get the emails from them in order to stay on top of what he enemy is up to. So I can see that they are up to the same old thing. Lying and begging.

Like that is really a productive way to live a life.

Christmas - 2012

Looking at my blog I see that I did not even update the yearly Messiah Program that my wife and I sing in every year. Let's call it a hiatus. We once again did sing in it and had a wonderful time. I did stay awake and fully aware the entire time yet still made a few errors. Good thing there are lots of voices there to cover me...

Lately I've been spending time listing books on eBay and letting politics wander aimlessly without my help or input. As far as 'religion' goes I've been keeping up with church attendance and chatting with God throughout the day. Also I get into text message debates with a JW friend.

His (the JW's) big thing this season is, as is every year, DON'T CELEBRATE CHRISTMAS! and to this I say, Romans 14:5 - "In the same way, some think one day is more holy than another day, while others think every day is alike. You should each be fully convinced that whichever day you choose is acceptable." - NLT -

I say that that verse says so much more than which days to celebrate or not. It says to me that God expects us to have differences of opinions. The chapter also says to accept people for believing differently than you. ACCEPT THEM? WHAT KIND OF NONSENSE IS THAT? All the people that don't agree with me should be whacked upside the head to have some sense knocked into them.

Well, I think accepting them (in spite of them having pointy little heads) is one of the things that truly makes following Jesus a tough thing to do. But what costs does this type of 'following Jesus' incur? One is losing the ability to proclaim, "I'm better than you because ___________!" (Fill in the blank) - So much for pride and self righteousness. Both of which I have an overabundance of.

That is why salvation is a two part process. - The initial meeting of Jesus. Having Him come into your heart in a real and tangible way. What some call the 'Born Again' experience. And next is having your life changed as a result of that experience.

None of us is 'better' than the next guy because we all have a mix of good and bad in us. Right thinking and twisted thinking. Nice actions/reactions and not so nice. ... We all need fixing. That is by God's standards and not our own.

The only source I've found for getting my life fixed is through my personal relationship with Jesus. Sometimes I work harder at the relationship than other times. Sometimes I'm inspired to walk hand in hand with Him and other times I get self centered and go my own way. - But through it all I've found HE IS FAITHFUL! He promised He will never leave me nor forsake me. I believe that because a.) It is in the Bible and b.) I've experienced it.

This Christmas Season has been great for me because it has presented some faith building opportunities and given me a chance to build my relationship with He who came not to live in a castle but He who came to live in our hearts. One thing that always gets me in the Christmas story is that the only God of the universe became incarnate in a stinky stable.

That can be likened to the way he came to live in my heart. I didn't need to get it cleaned up before His arrival. That was a good thing too because I never would have gotten it clean enough. Instead He came in as soon as I invited him. The simple prayer, "Lord! Come into my heart. I need you Jesus!" did the trick for me. As the song says, "He Touched Me".

Added benefit: As I allow him more room in my heart he does all the cleaning up too. May you find the same benefits in your life. If you don't know Him simply ask Him to reveal Himself to you. Remember there is a holiday that celebrates the other end of His sojourn on earth. At that point in time He rose from the dead and HE IS STILL ALIVE!

Temecula & Murrietta Messiah Program is on for 2010!

My wife and I got a missive in our email box and even though I've slowed down on blog posting this is one event I don't want to miss posting! More than once I've met people after the Messiah performance who saw this posted while searching for info on it. My pic is on the right side of this blog (the fuzzy face) so if you can introduce yourself we'd love to meet you.

For those of you in Southern California, particularly Riverside, Temecula/Murrietta area this is a FREE MUST SEE. (Freewill Offering is taken...)

My wife Renee sings soprano and I sing bass so that keeps us on opposite sides of the stage so we don't get to play "The Battling Bickerson's" during the performance. We might put on a show afterward so you might want to stick around.

For those of you who can attend you will not be disappointed. This is not a hokey event. They even make me wear a red bow tie. Great 30 piece live orchestra and this year it might be 70 voices.

One opportunity a year for this single annual performance that is, as it is each year, on the first Sunday of December. This year it will also be held at the same location as last years event...

Once again, our annual "Celebrate Messiah" Christmas Concert will be held Sunday December 5th at 4:00 PM at the Temecula United Methodist Church, located at 42690 Margarita Road, Temecula CA 92592. We anticipate having a 70-voice community choir and a 30-seat community orchestra to celebrate Handel’s incomparable oratorio.

This year we will be performing more Messiah selections than ever before, a total of 26 numbers. We are adding 2 new choruses (All We Like Sheep, and The Lord Gave the Word) as well as a new bass solo (The Trumpet Shall Sound). Last year’s event included the addition of sing-along Christmas carols, which we will reprise this year as well. Event Founder Madge Griffing will be sharing conducting duties with her sons Rev. Barry and Steve Griffing.

2010 Temecula & Murrietta Messiah Concert GREAT once again!

Once again the annual "Celebrate Messiah" Christmas Concert was held on the first Sunday of December at the Temecula United Methodist Church. The church was packed and this singer's view of the audience showed a lot of happy, smiling faces. After the concert I heard quite a few people complimenting the performance. The orchestra was wonderful, the soloists brought tears to people's eyes and even yours truly teared up on occasion as we sang scriptures set to the music of Handel.

This year Madge Griffing had passed the baton of conducting duties to her sons Rev. Barry and Rev. Steve Griffing. Their switching use of the conductor stand went flawlessly and even their differing styles of conducting had a positive effect on the music. A few more songs were added this year for both soloists and the full choir. I especially loved the song, "All We Like Sheep" which really keeps the singers and musicians on their toes and has at the end one of the most profound statements in Christianity.

The recording of our concert evidently did not work properly due to technical issues so I found the above mentioned song on You Tube by the Brisbane Concert Choir which has a lot of excellent postings of their performances of various songs from Handel's Messiah. Maybe next year...

Afterward I also had the opportunity to make some new friends and once again my verboseness (Is that a word? Well! It is now...) had my wife getting on me that it was time to leave. Happens every year. In fact, the first year my wife and I were involved in performing in this concert, it was blogger extraordinaire Douglas V. Gibbs and I, meeting face to face for the first time that had both our wives acting in conjunction and one in spirit as they dragged us apart, both still talking. and I can't remember if we were shouting across the parking lot to one another as we were getting in our cars but I can imagine it happening.

Well (once again) I digress. Put it on your calendar for next year. The first Sunday of December. Temecula California, Rancho Music Association.

Get me to the church on time!

Pastor Mike at 'A heart for God' posted last January (5Jan2010) a piece titled, "Why I'm Showing Up Late for Church" He had recently 'tweeted' the link and I happened to catch it. - Good points he makes in his posting and I had to reply. Since I'm such a slow typist and have not been posting here as much as I should I decided to put my 'comment' on this blog as well as his. Sort of a two-fer.

Also managed to get a song rolling through my head (don't worry it didn't hurt) and just had to use it for the title of this posting. I hope it does not distract those of you that like to sing and dance from the message below... Print it out or send the link to your pastor. Better yet! Add to my ideas with a comment AND get this message to your pastor.

I have an advantage over many in our congregation due to the fact that I (as a lay member congregant not 'paid staff') have pre-service ministry duties. As a result my church time starts well ahead of the service time. Although one disadvantage is that When church starts I'm usually in 'Martha Mode' doing busy work and it sometimes takes a few minutes to switch to 'Mary Mode' where I'm ready to sit at His feet and listen.

I would encourage pastors to seek out those that are continually late, figure out their gifts, find/make helps ministries that would fit them and as Ephesians 4:11-13 suggests, put them to work (hopefully prior to church/services starting times).

From the pulpit I think pastors should also encourage people to get to church early not with events or for Bible studies or meetings with agendas and such but just for the opportunities to fellowship with friends.

Pre-service times can be a great opportunity for people to minister to one another with the unique gifts and fruit of the Spirit that God gives to each of us. Sharing these with one another in the 'safe' environment of the church can only help us when God calls us to use these same gifts and fruits outside of the church.

After all, the Lord does not call us to be 'self centered' but 'other centered'. Getting to church on time is just one of the ways we can fall in line with God's calling.

Some pastors may feel uncomfortable dealing with this issue. If so, that is great! Because it will give them an opportunity to get out of their comfort zone and at the same time get some of the congregants out of theirs...

One of the WORST Scam Letters Yet

Got the following in my spam box.

"Why inflict us with it?", you say.

Well I thought it rather humorous and I like funny OK?

As I said, before you so rudely interrupted me, it was in my spam box and the line said from: 'taran sawhney' --- 'Greeting from Mr. Mr.Peters Jim' --- This piqued my interest because I wondered why Mr.Peters Jim needed to use Taran's email to send me his obvious Nigerian 419 scam. I thought perhaps the letter might have some sort of explanation... - - - Nope. - - - Not even a mention of Taran as assistant or secretary.

Digression Follows ~~~
This came from a Yahoo account to a Yahoo Account, had a nifty little icon of an envelope with a bright yellow key. A mouse rollover showed it clickable with the words, "This sender is DomainKeys verified." appearing. - Clicking it opened a new window for me and on the top line Yahoo says, "DomainKeys is one of the tools Yahoo! uses to fight against forged email. It uses encryption technology to verify that an email is really from the domain from which it appears to be. If a message has been verified through DomainKeys, you'll see a small icon of an envelope and key in the email header."

So the little envelope/key that is designed to instill trust in an email was verifying the scammer did not forge the headers. I feel better about that. Forged headers are the first thing I wonder about with 419 scam letters. And that is cool that it really came from a Yahoo account. Yahoo DOES work fast to delete such accounts and it means the scammer will be spending a bit more time setting up a new account instead of fleecing people. So I've forwarded the message with headers to Yahoo and they will know without jumping around that, 'Yes indeed! This is a misuse of our services'...

Prop 8 - Gay Marriage - My Thoughts

Has been a while since I posted. Well, here is something I wrote as a comment on another person's blog -- Separation of church and state except regarding Proposition 8 --

"legally marry" - You used this term and I have to wonder if you have really thought about it. Plus I wonder if you know the history of the marriage license in the U.S.?

Prior to the Civil War there was no interference from the state or federal govt. in the union of two people.

It seems that after the Civil War there were many women asking for their legal compensation for their husbands dying in service to their country. This was when the govt really started to hand out the licenses and they found it was a way to control the populace.

From above link: Black's Law Dictionary defines "license" as, "The permission by competent authority to do an act which without such permission [...] would be illegal." The authority to license implies the power to prohibit. A license by definition "confers a privilege" to do something. By allowing the state to exercise control over marriage, it is implied that we do not have a right to marry; marriage is a privilege. Those born in the US receive a birth certificate, not a birth license.

and this: In the early part of the 20th century, the requirement for a marriage licence (sic) was used as a mechanism to prohibit whites from marrying blacks, mulattos, Japanese, Chinese, Native Americans, Mongolians, Malays or Filipinos.[1] By the 1920s, 38 states used the mechanism. The Constitution was designed by The Founders (TM) not to control the populace but for the populace to control the government. Unfortunately this has been turned around on us with everyone wanting a handout and their own interests served first. So now we have a government that is controlling and overbearing and getting more power than The Founders (TM) meant for them to have.

Back to your use of the term "legally marry". - Lets ask ourselves the following, without 'religion' or 'church' involvement.

What is the past & current definition of marriage? (even most of those who want homosexual marriage agree it now is - one man/one woman. That is if they will be honest. That is what they are trying to do after all is redefine the word)

Should one small segment of society (albeit it is growing due to peoples ignorance) be allowed to change the legal definition of 'Marriage' through tugging on heartstrings, with accusations of 'hatred', 'homophobia', and 'bigotry'?

Once this legal definition is changed what is next?

The argument in the comments, "Except for the fact that history does not bear out that slippery-slope argument." is false AND misleading.

History does bear it out and we can see it through numerous examples. Did Hitler take control in a single day? Did Social Security go bankrupt the first day our government started abusing the funds? Even if there were no examples of any past 'slippery slopes' could this be 'the first one'? What would be next? Perhaps something I like and you don't?

I don't expect you to change your mind on this matter. But I do hope that you will slack off a bit on the rhetoric.

Personally I think the government (both state and federal) should get out of licensing peoples relationships as well as licensing pets.

More On (or is that Moron?) Spam Emails

Twice yesterday I received messages from friends that their email addresses were compromised and not to click any links until further notice. One was from a MSM account and the other a Yahoo account.

One lead to http://pvc0.ukparasd.com/ (AKA - http://medicaltoystore.net/ - which touts itself as Canadian Health & Care Mall {also Canadian health&care mall} ) which is one of those cheap pill pages. How those sites ever make money I don't know. The competition is immense and they all have the same cookie cutter web pages on them. I just hope that their stuff is not poisonous. Had a friend say that probably all they send out is sugar pills anyway.

The other website that used a friends email address and list of friends addresses is: http://www.snnsn.com/ - Supposedly selling cameras and computer related items. Just thought I'd put this out there so people that might be wondering about using either of these sites will have a chance to find out that there are some people that have been spammed by them.

The owners of those sites might say that they contracted with some other outfit that spammed people. If that were true then they are guilty of not doing their homework and making sure they are dealing with reputable outfits. that excuse still does not assure me that putting my credit card info into their site will be a safe thing to do.

Any outfit that does business like that will not get my dollars

Another thing is when you get a forwarded email with a long list of emails send it back to the person who sent it to you with a reprimand. Using BCC is easy and if they don't know how to use it (AND delete previous email addresses) they should not be allowed on the internet. They only make your email address susceptible to spammers and hackers.

Spam using my email address

Lately I've gotten two spams returned to me as 'undeliverable'. They are abusing my email address. The headers show the original spammers 'from' location as being persons names not associated with prying1. My apologies if you have received spam this way.

"Julia Chase" and "Joseph Francis" are two names used. I suspect there will be more. "Buy quality and safe medications here." and "Same quality of meds for lower prices." are two of the subject lines. Both had links to livejournal.com pages that have been suspended. Kudos to Live Journal for staying on top of their website.

Forged headers are nothing new and years ago I've gotten nasty emails from people that said I gave them a virus. Clicking on links and attachments in emails from people you do not know is not the way to do it.

Even if an email does come addressed from someone you know if it seems fishy it is a simple matter to call or email your friend and ask them if they sent it. So a day passes before you get to see whatever it is they sent. More than once I've done this and found that a spammer was abusing a friends email address.

Be careful out there. The Internet can be a mean and nasty place.

Each year dozens of people that love to sing spend time practicing in small groups, join together for one group practice and then put on a concert that is enjoyable, uplifting, delightful and a whole slew of positive adjectives.

This has happened in Temecula/Murrieta California for untold years now and is a free event.

Handel's Messiah is one classical music piece that is enjoyed by people of all faiths although Christians versed in scriptures of both Testaments seem to be the majority of audiences. Perhaps because it is most often played in churches.

The entire oratorio now named, Handel's Messiah was written in just 24 days. This is most impressive if one looks at it in it's entirety. The singers, bass, tenor, alto, Soprano (Sopranos deserve a capital letter!) are often individually singing different pieces of music from the rest of the group. The instruments have their own sheets of music that would only confuse most of the singers if the pages were mixed up.

Altogether, if the notes were placed on their sides and laid end to end it would only stretch halfway to heaven. - However! Standing up straight and in the jiggly lines Handel wrote them in they reach all the way!!!

A remarkable feat is what I say.

For many it is the start of the Christmas Season. For me Christmas Season really seems to start when the practices start. The Performance kicks it into gear and fires up the Holiday/Holyday Season.

Couldn't have said it better myself. Although this was written for the English government in the late 1800's the words can be applied across the globe. Less intrusive government is better for all mankind.

Left Coast Righteo and the Starrettwire

I should have posted this sooner but. Here it is...

For a few weeks now my friend, Doc Mike (Michael Harris) and I (Paul Young) have been doing an online radio show on Blog Talk Radio (BTR). We named the show "Left Coast Righteo". It was designed to allow people to the west of Illinois a place to go after Cyber Pastor and AnnieB finished their Christian, Pro-Troops, Right of Center "Do the Right Thing" radio show also on BTR.

Their show ends early (midnight or later their time) on the left coast and late on the right coast yet there were friends and an online community still clamoring for more online radio with Blog Talk Radio.

As a result Doc Mike and I decided, to fill the void, to do a show together from the Pacific coast on Tuesdays (9:30 PM Pacific) and Thursdays (8:30 PM Pacific). How Low Can "ART" Go?

Ok! here is the deal. I'm not an artist but I know what art I like. Artists need people like me to appreciate what they do or they starve. Come to think of it if they had to live on what monies I devote from my pocket to art they ALL would starve. I might trade and barter though. Then through eBay they might make a a few bucks...

Anyway! Art I like has to usually make sense. I do like some of the stuff that is like inkblots and you have to guess what it is. I also like the find it pictures like "Where's Waldo". And mazes. But I learned early in life if you start in the center and work out it is easier.

But I digress. ... Rereading I find this whole post is, so far, digression...

In London at Trafalgar Square there are four "Plinths" or large bases for statues. One of them, the Forth Plinth has been vacant since it's construction initially due to insufficient funds but left empty due to political arguments over what to put there.

Use for the empty plinth has temporarily been settled with a deal called "One & Other", "A grand project that is meant to stretch the boundaries of sculpture by placing 2,400 people on the square’s usually vacant fourth plinth, for an hour apiece (only one at a time), from now through Oct. 6."

"This is not about privilege, not about power, not about war or honoring the dead," said the artist, Antony Gormley. "It’s about celebrating the living." Britons (only) are lifted to the empty plinth by a 'cherry picker' and you can watch. The website has a disclaimer that there might be offensive content and Gormley stated in an interview, "Nakedness is absolutely essential," ... "Nakedness is to art what the ball is to football."

London’s mayor, Boris Johnson, had a different take: “It’s a triumphant meditation on the themes of fame and glory,” he declared. “My friends, someday your plinth will come.”

The idea seems simple, but has been fairly complicated to pull off. More than 17,000 people have applied for the slots, mostly through the Internet, with winners — who have to be over 16 and living in Britain — selected by a computer algorithm that accounts for geographical diversity. The slots for September and October have yet (at the time of this posting) to be filled.

Well I only have seen two people so far and I'm still waiting for the art...

In the first 24 minutes I saw one lady holding her hands in supplication to the sky, bringing them down to a prayerful attitude, then bending to place her hands on the ground, then back up to the sky. Some kind of art or perhaps just a statement that I could not understand. She should have set up a sign to proclaim what the heck she was doing. Praying to the Living God or worshiping the sky and earth... The next gal I saw was tearing Kleenex (Reg TM for facial tissue) into little tiny pieces and allowing the wind to litter the city with it. An hour of littering London with bits of paper is art? ... Well I am glad I'm not paying for it. Nor do I have to clean it up. I'll sit entranced wondering if she might have to blow her nose and if she will tear that one into little pieces.

At least it is not a crucifix in a jar of urine, a picture of Mary made from elephant dung nor a bullwhip up some rectal aperture's anal aperture.

This gal with the Kleenex looks self satisfied like she really accomplished something. They are now coming with the cherry picker and the replacement. Some character wearing what looks like a cow costume.

Now That is ART!

Obamacare is a Job Killer

A business must plan to spend X amount of dollars for their labor. Normally this plan includes at least a bit of profit. Depending on business one year may see a bit more profit, another year a bit of loss. In the middle are expenses of which labor normally takes the biggest chunk.

The way I see this GOVERNMENT is planning on mandating that business put a bigger chunk of CHANGE into the soon to be GOVERNMENT controlled health industry.

Raising the prices of goods can only go so far before buyers go elsewhere or do without. With raising prices the ultimate consumer of those goods and services pays the GOVERNMENT controlled health industry.

These moneys must come from somewhere and even for a very, very low profit margin the only place I can see it coming from is salaries. That is until Government absolutely controls those too through their raising of minimum wages and perhaps someday putting caps on peoples take home checks.

The only difference between Obamacare and Hillarycare is the magnification of the scope and angle of the gun sights on the 'little people'. Some difference huh?

Google is Soooo Nice to Racists!

Here is one for you. Google has a chance to stand against an insidious type of racism, NATIONALIST BIGOTRY, but they instead fold. And they fold at the request of those that are the recipients of the bigotry.

From Times Online UK... Google Earth maps out discrimination against burakumin caste in Japan...

A handful of innocent-looking antique maps, one offensive word and tens of thousands of offended "untouchables" have plunged Google into an unspoken class war that has raged in Japan for centuries.

Despite its ambition to be the cartographer of the internet age, the search engine has lumbered into one of the darkest corners of Japan - the bigotry of mainstream Japanese society towards the Burakumin, the "filthy mob", whose ancestors fell outside the caste system of the 17th-century samurai era.

By allowing old maps to be overlaid on satellite images of Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto on its Google Earth service, the search engine shows how the old ghettos relate to the 21st-century streets.

That, critics say, is perfect ammunition to hurt descendants of the people who lived there 400 years ago.

OK! Got that? 400 years ago sections of Tokyo were the living spaces of outcasts. They were the black sheep of the nation concerning whom Wikipedia says, "The burakumin are descendants of outcast communities of the feudal era, which mainly comprised those with occupations considered "tainted" with death or ritual impurity (such as executioners, undertakers or leather workers), and traditionally lived in their own secluded hamlets and ghettos."

I imagine they were the outhouse cleaners too but Wiki does not say that. The Times Online article goes on to say,

Under pressure to diffuse criticism, the search engine has asked the owners of the woodblock print maps to remove the legend that identifies the ghetto with an old term that translates loosely as "scum town".

Google has unwittingly created a visual tool, however, that would have prolonged an ancient discrimination into the internet age, according to the lobbying group established to protect the human rights of three million burakumin.

Members of the sub-class were condemned by the old feudal system to unclean jobs associated with death and dirt. Laws made 150 years ago supposedly ended the caste system but, their descendants say, the prejudice remains.

Google should have told the burakumin folks that they would work with them to end the discrimination not by removing or changing the maps but instead shaming the perps of the prejudice and encouraging the people of the world to abstain from buying products manufactured by companies that acquiesce, allow, or even encourage this twisted mindset.

Many Japanese people are so filled with this jaundice that they bring it home and fill their lives with it.

Companies sometimes hire private detectives to ensure that they are not employing someone of burakumin ancestry. Parents may run a similar check on their prospective son or daughter-in-law, and children may be excluded from good schools. Property prices in burakumin communities are lower than in the areas that surround them and public works projects take longer to be completed in the zones.

Toru Matsuoka, an opposition MP and member of the Buraku Liberation League, said that it amounted to illegal bullying.

Prying1 would like to see Google set up an OUTING service. One that would OUT those idiots that are guilty of continuing a 400 year 'tradition' of ostracizing fellow human beings. A way to present the people guilty of this nationalist racism to the world and show them for what they are. Segregationist rectal apertures.

Shame them and if that does not work hit them in the pocket book. They need to be taught the words of Dr. Martin Luther King, "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."

And these narrow minded bigots are not even using the color of skin as a standard to throw their unreasoned hatred at but instead the jobs their great, great, great, great, great grand parents held. Talk about stupid...

One more thing. Japanese government intervention concerning this problem seems to have it's own set of problems with fraud and waste.

Does Portions of Our Government Have Our Best Interest at Heart?

Jim Kouri has posted on American Daily Review an article titled, Cyber Threats and Vulnerabilities Continue

In his commentary/post Jim Kouri states:

These threats can be unintentional and intentional, targeted or non-targeted, and can come from a variety of sources, such as foreign nations engaged in espionage and information warfare, criminals, hackers, virus writers, and disgruntled employees and contractors working within a targeted organization.

Moreover, these groups and individuals have a variety of attack techniques at their disposal, and cyber exploitation activity has grown more sophisticated, more targeted, and more serious. As government, private sector, and personal activities continue to move to networked operations, as digital systems add ever more capabilities, as wireless systems become more ubiquitous, and as the design, manufacture, and service of information technology have moved overseas, the threat will continue to grow.

I had to comment and since I type my diatribes slowly I thought to bring my comment here to get more bang for my buck...

I'm a cynic and as a result when I read government names such as "Comprehensive National Cybersecurity Initiative" I instantly ask, "How much graft and corruption is going on there?" So I Googled, Comprehensive National Cybersecurity Initiative (no quotes) and the first hit took me to the NIST.gov website for it... Comprehensive National Cyber Security Initiative: Leap-Ahead Security Technologies
(+$5 million) ...

After reading about it from their website I could see that such a wing of our government could, if run by ethical people, have a benefit to the security of our nation and be in line with the Constitution. You know. The part that says government's purpose is to protect U.S. citizens.

Looks to me like the NIST program could do it's job and do it well IF politicians stay out of it's way. According to this Wired story ... What’s Up with the Secret Cybersecurity Plans, Senators Ask DHS Sens. Joe Lieberman (I-Connecticut) and Susan Collins (R-Maine) asked questions that I think, if answered, might give cyber terrorists and criminals new directions for hacking that they otherwise may have been ignorant of or ignored.

There does need to be oversight but not at the expense of security.

Is a State Official Driving a Stolen Car?

A 2006 Illinois State law allowing state police to seize the personal property of repeat drunk driving offenders resulted in the seizure of a high performance car early this year.

Taken from it’s rightful owner was a 2006 Dodge Charger with a V-8 Hemi engine that speeds from zero to 60 MPH in five seconds and has a topped out speedometer reading of 165. The high-end cruiser had only 26,000 miles on it when the police forcefully took it from its owner.

But instead of using the car to snare lead-footed drivers or selling it to raise money for the state budget, officials assigned it to the director of the State Police Merit Board, according to interviews and a review of records by The Associated Press.

Why isn't the Charger on the road? It's too powerful and conspicuous, State Police spokesman Lt. Scott Compton said.

Compton said there's nothing improper about handing over the sports car to the director of an agency that administers state troopers' hiring, firing and discipline. Merit Board director Ronald Cooley agreed.

"It's not a situation where I'd do anything for them or they for me," Cooley said. "It helped our budget and they had something they couldn't use."

Analyze that and we see the typical twisted logic necessary for compromising integrity.

They did DO something for you Cooley! They GAVE you a car! (Although "ASSIGNED" does sound official it is still the same thing.) Whose budget did it help? By the word "OUR" did you mean you and your family or the state you are supposed to serve?

I'd like to know also how much taxpayers money was spent on salaries of how many 'public servants' as they farted around figuring out who should be awarded (or is it rewarded?)this vehicle.

Is it politically correct to suggest tar and feathering be brought back into vogue?

This update line is to simply say FANBOX lies! Got an email yesterday. "Check out the Smile ***** sent you." Actually three of them. One person sent it to another who signed up and sent me the second which went to two email addresses. So I checked the site the emails led me to and was too busy to check it further then.

This morning I went "Digging a little deeper."

Now, dear reader, know that I have not signed up for their services so all of the following is second hand info from other websites and commenters at those sites.

Typed Fanbox into Google and came up with their site as the first hit then "Steve Riley on Security : FanBox: the latest in password scams" as the second hit. (Google list is subject to change)

The rest of the hits are pretty much of the same cut of cloth.

Came across a couple of comments on websites from (they say) ex employees that gives a little insight into the Fanbox company. Unethical is one word that describes them. Spamhuntress has a posting that tells us, sms.ac turns into fanbox What once was a disreputable company has changed their name but not their modus operandi.

Here is the bottom line. When signing up for their service they ask you for your email password and if you give it to them they will start spamming your friends, business associates and acquaintances. IF YOU HAVE GIVEN THEM YOUR PASSWORD CHANGE IT IMMEDIATELY!!!

Any Cellphone numbers they are given will apparently receive 'premium' text messages that charge the cell phone user. They can get these phone numbers from email address books that unsuspecting users give them the passwords to.

They also apparently have downloads that will invade your computer and mess with your life. DELETE OR UNINSTALL ANY DOWNLOADS YOU HAVE FROM THEM.

The best advice I've seen regarding Fanbox comes from Consumer Fraud Reporting. Spam and Scam:Fanbox.com "Welcome to FanBox"

They suggest:

Once again it comes down to Internet users getting savvy about the Internet. Just because a website has a cute smiley face does not mean you will continue smiling after you start dealing with them... Dig a Little Deeper before signing up for services. Type in the website name followed by the word Scam. This will show you if there are complaints about the site...

Do We Need Government Mandated Noise Polution?

Imagine this:

Walking down the street a normally quiet electric car jumps the curb. The driver is too drunk to apply the brakes so there is no screech of tires on the road or sidewalk BUT!!! Thanks to our government who is always there to protect us from cradle to grave we jump in time so we are only gravely injured instead of mortally injured.

Fake engine noise makes electric cars safer

I live in Inglewood California and for YEARS!!! the City of Inglewood has been collecting money from the Feds to alleviate LAX airport noise. Our tax dollars at work to make a quieter city. So they tell us. We know not to ask where the money goes. Word on the street is they have thugs on call at City Hall.

For years I've been hearing scientists say that excessive sound levels can disturb people and cause health problems. One sound does not cancel out another but simple adds another layer to the sounds we hear. Sound on sound is a problem they say.

For years I've dealt with tinnitus as the sirens from Police, ambulances, fire trucks and now the idiots in our government want to legislate our listening to more noise?

As hospitals close the only nearby one that now has an emergency room is less than a mile from my house. Sirens converge on it and the emergency vehicles seem to love waking people at 3 in the morning so the wakee can be impressed with the job being performed by the waker. Since there are virtually no cars on the road at 3 AM I can only surmise that is the reason for the sirens. The aircraft noise is not to much of a problem at 3 AM because they land from over the ocean and not over the city at that time.

Enough grumbling. The purpose of this posting is to protest the un-illustrious elected official "Representative Peter King" (R-NY) whose idea/bill will force cell phone manufacturers to make the camera feature of a cell phone emit a noise so that it will be audibly obvious when a picture is taken.

He says it is aimed at preventing "predators" from taking illicit photos of others in public with cell phones.

It will also alert criminals when they are caught in the act by law abiding citizens. Not to mention politicians entering a cat house would be alerted by the sound of their constituents who might want to blogpost the picture. And the next time Rodney King has a run in with the law camera phones can be confiscated.

The bill summary at Thomas.loc.gov states:
Requires any mobile phone containing a digital camera to sound a tone whenever a photograph is taken with the camera’s phone. Prohibits such a phone from being equipped with a means of disabling or silencing the tone. Treats the requirement as a consumer product safety standard and requires enforcement by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

And this guy is a Republican?

What about digital cameras? Are they next?

Face it folks! We are screwed with today's batch of politicians.

How about this for a law "Representative Peter King" (R-NY) - - - Convicted and released gang-bangers must wear a device that emits a piercing shriek every ten seconds to warn people to hang on to their wallets. And the device must be worn within 3 inches of the gang-bangers ears.

Or pull a gun to commit a crime = 10 years, Fire the gun = 25 years, Hit someone with a bullet = 50 years, Kill someone = Death penalty!

Carry a gun to protect oneself or others = a party in this good citizens honor!

Pro Terrorist or Pro Israel?

Last Saturday I had the privilege to attend a pro terrorist gathering at the Federal Building on Wilshire, Los Angeles. I say 'privilege' because in the United States even fools and idiots have the right to free speech and this was evident at the event.

No. I did not go to support the terrorists. I went to defend Israel. Ended up being part of a small group of about 24 pro Israel supporters standing against 1500 to 2000 pro terrorists. This was Saturday (the Jewish Sabbath). Sunday, (the Christian Sabbath) was the day for a Pro Israel RALLY (as opposed to protest) but I could not attend due to church obligations. Sure wish I could have. From the account by THE TYGRRRR EXPRESS, a blogger whom I had the privilege of meeting at this event, the Sunday meeting was the more enjoyable one. He got to attend both and gives a great posting on them. Real peace and love was more in evidence at the Pro Israel Rally. Although the pro terrorists had a few (profane) counter voices there too.

The Saturday protest was in favor of Hamas continuing to lob missiles into Israel and the usual communistic hangers on were there too. The Che Guevara, Fidel is our friend & Kiss Mao's butt crowd with their nonsensical agenda. Put on by some group that spent hours making an acronym of a good word for their own nefarious purpose. The ANSWER (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) Coalition. How is that for a catchy name?

Only problem with that name is that it is not true. Should be ANSWEREAJ. (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism EXCEPT AGAINST JEWS)

One woman there had the audacity to suggest to a Jew's face that the 'ovens' should be brought back. Profanity was shouted and the middle finger salute were thrust out of car windows as they passed waving Palestinian flags at our little group that had Israeli and U.S. Flags and a few signs. Anger directed toward us from these people was tempered by the cars that came by honking, throwing kisses and waving support for Israel.

My signs stated, "Does Allah Demand Human Sacrifice???" and the other said, "The God Of Israel Doesn't!!!".

One Pro terrorist woman walking by read my sign and angrily said, "Yes he does!" That kind of made me think a bit. Would she prefer my throat spilling blood on the sidewalk? Sounded like it. I mentioned my sign in a chatroom later and a friend sent me to this Atlas Shrugs link. That answered both my questions.

So it comes down to: Does one want to associate with a people that hate America, hate a race of people (racism), is continually profane, has a god that endorses human sacrifice, and wants to destroy any anti socialistic nations?

or

Support a country that truly does want peace in their region but is getting fed up with missiles landing in their back yards.

Happy New Year!

First blog post of the year.

Having the day off I decided I need to list more books on my website but got sidetracked.

Blog Talk Radio caught my attention with a Medallion Press Radio Show. Only caught the tail end live but had to go back and listen to the archives. Want to know about "bum glue" you have to listen to the Jan 1.2009 show. This is a radio show for readers and writers. Paul, the host and representative of the publishing houseMedallion Press, does a great job interviewing authors and should be used as an example for anyone thinking of using Blog Talk Radio for promoting their business. No matter the subject his style is a good example to learn from.

I signed up for a Twitter Account (prying1) and of course I have to see what the friends I'm following have to say, this, the first day of the year. I saw that Twitterer TribalRootz gave a link for a 'New' Marisa Bondy You Tube Video. Check her Winds of Liberty You Tube (link above) and also check the Marisa Bondy singing "Crazy" Video.

So much for listing books. It seems that the internet is a great place to make friends, get information, and spend a day not getting any work done. Well! It is a holiday...

Anarchist Hate Crime in Lansing! Where is the MSM and ACLU?

On Sunday morning, amidst worshiping congregants and following unifying prayers that our President-elect be granted wisdom as he prepares to lead our nation through difficult global, social and economic challenges, the Michigan left declared open war on peaceful church goers.

They did it with banners, chants, blasphemy, by storming the pulpit, by vandalizing the church facility, by potentially defiling the building with lewd, public, sex acts and by intentionally forcing physical confrontations with worshipers.

Their other props? I'll let them tell you in their own words... from another of their liberal blogs:

"(A) video camera, a megaphone, noise makers, condoms, glitter by the bucket load, confetti, pink fabric...yeh."

The Mount Hope Church is a deplorable, anti-queer mega-church in Lansing, Michigan. The church works to institutionalize transphobia and homophobia through several repulsive projects including organized "ex-gay" conferences and so-called "hell houses", which depict queers, trannies and womyn who seek abortions in hell. Mt. Hope is complicit in the repression of queers in Michigan and beyond.

Bash Back! ain't down with that. And so on Sunday November 9th, about thirty radical queers from Lansing, Chicago, Memphis and Milwaukee disrupted the church's most well-attended sermon.

At noon, a small group of folks dressed in pink and black, equipped with a megaphone, black flags, picket signs and an upside-down pink cross began demonstrating outside the church. The group was extremely loud and wildly offensive.

The demonstration drew a majority of Mount Hope's security staff outside to watch them.

Meanwhile, with the guards pre-occupied by the distraction, over a dozen queers had put on their Sunday-best and infiltrated the church's congregation. At the signal that the guards had been lured outside, the infiltrators sprung into action.

A group stood up, declared themselves fags, and began screaming loudly. Upon hearing the loud interruption, other affinity groups went into action. A team that had been hiding under the pews in the closed-off balcony dropped a banner and pulled back the curtains to reveal "IT'S OKAY TO BE GAY! BASH BACK!". Another group threw over a thousand fliers to the entirety of the congregation. The fire alarm was pulled. Queers began making out in front of the pastor. And within a matter of minutes, everyone had evaded the guards and made their escapes.

A gay anarchist group infiltrated the Mt. Hope Church in Eaton County Sunday morning, disrupting a service by pulling a fire alarm, dropping leaflets and yelling at parishioners, a pastor said.

The group, Bash Back, was simultaneously picketing outside the church, beating on buckets and using a megaphone to shout "Jesus was a homo" and other slogans as confused churchgoers continued to enter the building.

Members of Bash Back issued a press release Tuesday saying that it targeted Mt. Hope, a church that claims a flock of around 5,000, because it is, "complicit in the repression of queers in Michigan and beyond."

AND

When Eaton County Sheriff’s deputies arrived, they questioned the remaining protestors (city pulse spelling) in the church parking lot. Elieff and other church staff questioned the Bash Back members why Mt. Hope Church had been singled out.

"I don’t know," was an almost universal response.

Elieff acknowledged the group's right to protest, but he said the church's civil rights were infringed upon when the service was disrupted.

No one was arrested at the church, and, Elieff said, as far as he knew, no arrests have been made.

The disruption came from a group which calls itself Bash Back, and involved demonstrations outside the church and inside the sanctuary while services were under way, said Mt. Hope Church communications director David Williams.

Members of the group inside the church shouted pro-gay slogans, threw leaflets, unfurled a banner and pulled a fire alarm, then hastily departed, Williams said. There were no injuries, he said.

Hmmm. No mention of condoms??? Oh! They can't use that word because it is a family paper!

The actions of the Bash Back Group is not the norm for liberals and indeed some will say the group is not liberal but extreme anarchists and outside the definitions of left and right. Their website postings show disdain for both Republicans and Democrats. But I ask which side of the aisle is closer to their ideals concerning homosexuality? I'm certain they had no words of praise for McCain and Palin and more toleration for Obama.

That leaves those on the left closer to these "anarchist thugs" than conservatives.

I would not blame this on Obama's election but think perhaps these 'lost souls' planned on doing this no matter who won the race. I would like to hear the reactions of both McCain and Obama (Mr. Be Humble Around Evil...) concerning this 'incident'.

It will be interesting to see if the ACLU take the case and which side THEY are on....

Myself? I'm going to ask our pastor what he thinks about this situation and how he would want the men in the congregation to react. He is the leader of our portion of Christ's universal church and I will defer to him on this matter.

Prior to speaking with him, had this happened in our church, I would say that at least one or two would need some hospitalization...

Does Snow in London and Global Warming Mix?

Apparently the answer to the question is a resounding, "Yes!".

Snow fell as the House of Commons debated Global Warming yesterday - the first October fall in the metropolis since 1922. The Mother of Parliaments was discussing the Mother of All Bills for the last time, in a marathon six hour session.

I think God does this sort of thing to get a laugh. Do you think those inside the building cared about the unseasonable weather? (That is a rhetorical question.)

Of course not.

The bill creates an enormous bureaucratic apparatus for monitoring and reporting, which was expanded at the last minute.

One of the problems with the Global Warming Crowd is that they will take this unseasonable snow in London and say, "See! Global Warming is causing wide swings in the weather!" not, "Gosh! Weather changes from year to year."

We cannot win against such ridiculous reasoning as theirs.

But it does appear that the strangle hold the Global Warming Fanatics is loosening.

Recently the American media has begun to notice the odd incongruity of saturation media coverage here which insists that global warming is both man-made and urgent, and a British public which increasingly doubts either to be true. 60 per cent of the British population now doubt the influence of humans on climate change, and more people than not think Global Warming won't be as bad "as people say".

Perhaps all we need now is a way to make the Global Warming Idiots have to pay for the entirety of their plans to play God and control the weather. If we manage to remove taxpayer dollars from the equation they will find themselves digging into their own pockets and that will last how long? (another rhetorical question....)

Rhymes of a Lost Battalion Doughboy

Found what I think to be is a great book of poetry. Rhymes of a Lost Battalion Doughboy Wonderfully illustrated by Private Franklin Bly of "The Lost Battalion". - I've made free printable scans available for downloading in its entirety. (link below) - Send this link to those you think might be interested especially those in the military.

"Buck Private" McCollum and Buddies are the authors of several poems in a 28 page booklet. All were members of the 1st, 2nd, and some from the 3rd Battalions of the 308th Infantry, 77th Division. They were really 2 battalions and not singular as the title denotes. Led by Major Whittlesey and Capt. McMurty they were not really 'lost' but were cut off and found themselves in two separate traps of the enemy within 10 days. Through great suffering and privation those who survived numbered much less than those who went in. A short history of their ordeal is included in the booklet and along with the poem, The Fight of the Lost Battalion.

Through these poems, written in 1919, there are indications that much remains the same in war even when nearly 100 years and much technology separates the events.

I've scanned and uploaded the cover and pages of this booklet to make it available to everyone. There are also copies available online (Check Bookfinder.com - Rhymes of a Lost Battalion Doughboy in the title box) - but use care when ordering. Some unscrupulous bookdealers overcharge for newly published booklets. 1919 appears to be the first published edition.

The booklet in it's entirety can be downloaded from the links below. Obama's New Salute!

The Obama camp has a new salute! The story is at U.S. News and World Report and we at Prying1 find it to be quite a hoot. That they keep deleting comments is sort of funny and sad at the same time.

The story line for One Nation, Under a New Obama Salute says:

George Bush had his three-fingered W salute that supporters flashed when greeting him at presidential campaign events in 2000. And now, if a Los Angeles creative agency gets its way, Sen. Barack Obama will see fans meet him with his own salute like the one above. "Our goal is to see a crowd of 75,000 people at Obama's nomination speech holding their hands above their heads, fingers laced together in support of a new direction for this country, a renewed hope, and acceptance of responsibility for our future," says Rick Husong, owner of The Loyalty Inc. Husong tells me that he got the idea after seeing the famous Obama-Progress poster by artist Shepherd Fairey. "We wanted to get involved some way," he says. So, the agency came up with their own a symbol of hope and progress that also plays off Obama's name. "We thought, 'Let's try and start a movement where even while walking down the street, people would hold up the O and you would know that they were for Obama,' " says Husong. Much thought went into the relatively simple idea. "You interlace your hands in a circle, the interlacing being a symbol of different types of people coming together and the circle a symbol of unity," he says. Their design, unlike Fairey's, is free, and Husong is urging people to download it and print it on posters and T-shirts. "We want to see it everywhere, but more importantly we want this sign to take the world by storm."

I left a comment and it disappeared quite quickly. A glitch in their system? Highly unlikely. All I said was, "As a kid we used to make this sign to people and say, "Eat me!" Will this be the rallying cry of Obama supporters?"

EARTHQUAKE WATCH 2008

I figured that title might get a few extra hits from Google. Here in L.A. the same thing happens with the news whether it is a few sprinkles and we have STORM WATCH 2008 (Camera shows a puddle with drops of rain hitting it), a hillside fire, FIRESTORM WATCH 2008 (Stock footage of Malibu fire) or a trembler that knocks some cans and jars off some store shelves, EARTHQUAKE WATCH 2008 (Concerned newsreader asking, "How will the aftershocks affect YOU? We'll tell you at ten!"

Don't want to sound blase' concerning tragedies but after a certain point...

Even Reuters has this story listed on their website as, "reuters.com/article/latestCrisis/idUSN29374340"

Anyway. My story for EARTHQUAKE WATCH 2008 is:

I was pushing by hand a 4 wheeled cart loaded with paper (I work at a printing shop) across a blacktop parking lot and I missed the earthquake. The only vibrations I felt were from the loaded cart and I was traveling in the same direction the quake was going. That is, from east to west.

When I came through the door into the shop all the hanging fluorescent lamps were swinging and I thought, "This load isn't that heavy to cause that much vibration." - Once again proving I'm always right! -

I'm located around 50 miles from the quake's epicenter and from talking with those that felt it there was a rolling sensation such as one would feel on a road with several close small hills and valleys. Sometimes there are sharp jolts as a corduroy dirt road might give you but today's was not one of those.

P. S. My daughter missed it too. She was at her work.

Democrats Want To Elect An Idiot!!!

Listen up Democrats. This joker you have up for the hardest, most difficult job in the world is ignorant of too many things concerning our government and his learning curve will cost this country more than you and I can pay.

Why do I say this?

Because too many times he has revealed his ignorance concerning the constitution and the way our government works. You can call them gaffes and make excuses but can you really take the chance that they are not truly errors and in fact show his ignorance? Remember he is supposed to be a "CONSTITUTIONAL SCHOLAR"

A recent example is Obama's statement:

"the objective of this trip was to have substantive discussions with people like President Karzai or Prime Minister Maliki or President Sarkozy or others who I expect to be dealing with over the next eight to ten years."

Notice anything wrong with that line? If not you shouldn't vote. You too are ignorant. If you are ignorant on this point you might also be ignorant of other points.

Such as Obama's statement that,

"I am going to call in the Joint Chiefs of Staff and give them a new mission and that is to bring the war in Iraq to a close. We are going to get out."

Once again I ask if you know the problem with that line? - If not don't vote for Barack. Don't vote at all. Please stay home. You are ignorant and I doubt if you will take the time to get up to speed to learn how uneducated Barack is concerning things a president will need to know in advance in order to hit the ground running after he takes the oath of office.

I heard a caller on a talk radio show say that we need to give Barack Obama a CHANCE in order to see what he can do for this country.

A CHANCE? A CHANCE? Can this country afford to take a CHANCE? There really is a very large group of people on this planet that would slit your throat if given a chance and the number one job of the U.S. Government is to protect it's citizens.

Listen up Democrats! This isn't a poker game. Although we may feel like we've been playing strip poker when Obama ruins the economy. (Another thing he has shown himself to be ignorant about is economics!) Do you really want to roll the dice to see if Obama will keep all his promises? Trust me on this. He can't keep all his promises because they too are all over the place. Admit it and tell your friends that the Democrat party will have to bow out this time around.

There is too much at stake.

Bush, Democrats bicker over soaring energy prices???

OK! This Yahoo headline By TERENCE HUNT, AP White House Correspondent caught my eye and I had to check it out.

Bush, Democrats bicker over soaring energy prices

As if the rest of the Republican party hasn't said a word for the past ten or twenty years. After all. What do the 'people' called 'conservatives' count for when it comes to little issues like this? Issues better handled by the environmentalists.

The article states:

President Bush on Saturday tried to pin the blame on Congress for soaring energy prices and said lawmakers need to lift long-standing restrictions on drilling for oil in pristine lands and offshore tracts believed to hold huge reserves of fuel.

(What? In the middle of an online news article? Will capitalism ever lower it's ugly head?)

"It's time for members of Congress to address the pain that high gas prices are causing our citizens," the president said. "Every extra dollar that American families spend because of high gas prices is one less dollar they can use to put food on the table or send a child to college. The American people deserve better."

But then we read:

With gasoline prices above $4 a gallon, Bush and his Republican allies think Americans are more willing to allow drilling offshore and in an Alaska wildlife refuge that environmentalists have fought successfully for decades to protect. Nearly half the people surveyed by the Pew Research Center in late June said they now consider energy exploration and drilling more important than conservation, compared with a little over a third who felt that way only five months ago. The sharpest shift in attitude came among political liberals.

Oh? Is some o' dem lunkheads in this country startin' to wake up? Quick! Give 'em a gun and drag 'em to church!

Democrats say they are for drilling, but argue that oil companies aren't going after the oil where they already have leases. So why open new, protected areas? they ask. Democrats say there are 68 million acres of federal land and waters where oil and gas companies hold leases, but aren't producing oil.

Little known secret is that leases to drill are no good without the LICENSE to go with it. AND most of the leases are so old they will run out before any company could really pull a profit from them. (see unabashed Yahoo advertisement line above)

So that is why we can read:

"Americans are fed up every time they go to fill up and they're right to demand action. But instead of a serious response, President Bush and his allies simply repeat the same old line more drilling," Rep. Chris Van Hollen, D-Md., said in the Democrats' radio address.

"Democrats support more drilling," he said. "In fact, what the president hasn't told you is that the oil companies are already sitting on 68 million acres of federal lands with the potential to nearly double U.S. oil production. That is why in the coming days congressional Democrats will vote on 'Use It or Lose It' legislation requiring the big oil companies to develop these resources or lose their leases to someone else who will."

and they add:

"But we know that drilling by itself will not solve the problem of high gas prices," Van Hollen said. "We cannot drill our way to energy independence."

The Dems say this as if drilling will not do ANYTHING to lower prices. LISTEN UP YOU FOOLS THAT VOTE FOR DEMOCRATS! DRILLING FOR OIL WILL NOT FIX THE "ENTIRE PROBLEM" BUT NOT DRILLING WILL KEEP THE STATUS QUO!

So what is the solution according to the Democrats that have our best interest at heart?

He cited Democrats' calls to tap the nation's Strategic Petroleum Reserve, because it is full and "America's rainy day is now." And he said the country must focus on new energy policies that focus on alternatives to oil.

RIIIIGGGHHT! (to quote Bill Cosby) - Lets take the reserves (some say 30 days worth) that would militarily protect this country (We do have enemies still) and use 'em up lickety split. If the 70% of imported oil resources we now depend on dries up before we really need them it would leave America defenseless! Wunnerful, wunnerful! Not to mention we would have to replace that oil we use at higher prices. Bright Idea!

Bush said that Democrats are at fault and that "Americans are increasingly frustrated with Congress' failure to take action.

"One of the factors driving up high gas prices is that many of our oil deposits here in the United States have been put off-limits for exploration and production. Past efforts to meet the demand for oil by expanding domestic resources have been repeatedly rejected by Democrats in Congress."

Bush repeated his call for Congress to lift the restrictions, including a ban on offshore drilling. A succession of presidents from George H.W. Bush to Bill Clinton to the current president have sided against drilling in these waters as has Congress each year for 27 years, seeking to protect beaches and coastal states' tourism economies.

Notice the word "REPEATED" in the previous bit.

The idiotic liberals that are MORE WILLING TO ALLOW Obama to be president are going to, in effect, vote for higher gas prices. Obama has guaranteed it in his speeches. They have the same sort of stars in their eyes that Helen Thomas had for Tony Snow.

I know this might not seem the right place for it but I don't think Tony Snow would disapprove.

Smash the Eggshells

I don't think I'm the only one who is getting fed up with with the so called race baiters. Some of them are more than ridiculous. They are down right stupid. I could at this point bring up Jesse Jackson and his, Obama is "talking down to black people." remark but I won't. After all Obama is talking down to all people not just blacks.

An example of what I'm going off about here is shown by what happened in a Dallas County (TX) commissioners meeting on Jul 07, 2008. As reported by Kevin Krause in the Dallas City Hall Blog section of the Dallas Morning News:

A special meeting about Dallas County traffic tickets turned tense and bizarre this afternoon.

County commissioners were discussing problems with the central collections office that is used to process traffic ticket payments and handle other paperwork normally done by the JP Courts.

Commissioner Kenneth Mayfield, who is white, said it seemed that central collections "has become a black hole" because paperwork reportedly has become lost in the office.

Commissioner John Wiley Price, who is black, interrupted him with a loud "Excuse me!" He then corrected his colleague, saying the office has become a "white hole."

That prompted Judge Thomas Jones, who is black, to demand an apology from Mayfield for his racially insensitive analogy.

Mayfield shot back that it was a figure of speech and a science term. A black hole, according to Webster's, is perhaps "the invisible remains of a collapsed star, with an intense gravitational field from which neither light nor matter can escape."

Other county officials quickly interceded to break it up and get the meeting back on track. TV news cameras were rolling, after all.

Some people are overly sensitive and as a result they will have an outburst of umbrage at unexpected moments. This can be seen in the blog posting above where both Commissioner John Wiley Price and Judge Thomas Jones showed the world how severely overly-sensitive they are. It reaches the point of absurdity and I for one find their antics to be asinine. Not to mention I refuse to walk on eggshells around people like them any longer.

Perhaps I should rephrase that last sentence and put it in the past tense. I call people on it. I've done so in times past and will again do it when necessary.

It is not hard to call people on their being overly sensitive. Simply tell them that they are being overly sensitive, that it is a personal defect they need to work on and they need to learn to "get over it". It is time for them to grow up and mature a little. Not everyone in the world cares to follow a prescribed set of verbal rules when dealing with them and not everyone is out to offend them while trying to convey thoughts and ideas.

Tell them if they really feel it necessary to interrupt another's conversation for clarification of a term used then fine, but don't jump on another person's back because something inside them rises up like bile from a sour stomach. That is something that is inside of the protester not something inside of the innocent speaker.

This doesn't go for just black and white. I think this needs to be said to everyone that jumps on the "OFFENDED BANDWAGON" for whatever cause. Be they 'Native Americans' upset over the name of a baseball team, Mexicans over the Taco Bell Chihuahua or the Frito Bandito advertisements, or an atheist's self centered crying at the Cross on Mount Soledad in La Jolla, Calif. - (I'm willing to bet that Frito's would have sold a bunch if they had advertised for those people to shut up and played the song in their face.)

Bunch of jerks every one of them and we do a disservice to these people by not telling them to either grow up or shut up.

The only alternative is to keep on listening to them whine and after that to keep on listening to them whine. They will always find something else to snivel about if we just give in the first time.

As a P.S. to this posting I'd like to give a big WAY-TO-GO! and two ATTABOY'S! (no racial slur intended) to Commissioner Kenneth Mayfield for not backing down. Give him the Mayor's slot in the next election.

Obama and His Changes

As Obama entered the Oval Office a sense of satisfaction rose up in his breast and filled him with pride. The time line called for 3 years but everything rolled right along and fell into place more quickly that they had imagined. Little did he know that it would be only a year and a half after being elected and taking the oath of office that the plans for change would be completed.

Well, not quite completed. there was still a bit of work to be done. Engage the new Congress. All of the new members were ready to step in months ago. - Present the new Constitution. Hard to believe it was written in the 70's and although never implemented (Yet!) it withstood the test of time and needed no revisions. - Convince the people that all of the changes are, of course, for their own benefit. "After all. They elected me for 'Change'." he thought.

What changes there had been! Nationalizing the health care system, the energy system, communications systems and the transportation industries. All government controlled and he was in charge of the government. People had clamored for him to fix things and soon all would be running with a precision that only a well run government could implement.

The people that REALLY elected him wanted socialism. He had made clear his agenda to all who cared to look beneath the political veneer. Now they would have it and he would make sure they got the best socialistic country in the world. None of this namby pamby stuff like the Danes and the French. America would be a true socialism run BY THE PEOPLE and FOR THE PEOPLE.

Suddenly the door opened and two of his top advisers and friends entered followed by 3 men in uniform with weapons at the ready.

"What's this about?" said Obama.

"C'mon" said one of them. "Did you really think that you would end up on top of the pile when these changes were fulfilled? We've people with much more intelligence than you that will be running things."

"WHAT?" Obama exclaimed.

"We've set up a nice out of the way place in a beautiful Caribbean banana plantation for you. There are still a lot of rural people clinging to their guns and religion out there and we think it best you be protected from them. Plus you will get a lot of exercise and stay in shape by picking bananas. It will be your contribution to this whole new world. Don't worry. I'll take care of the country for you. After all, I am Your Biggest Fan."

Suddenly through my SiteMeter I see people visiting this Blogspot site after Google searching "Biff Lane". - Biff gets 313,000 hits without quotes and 23 Google hits with quotes. The link above leads to the poem, "Margin of Profit" from "Poetry to Remember" by Sara Webb Keaton. The reason for the visits/Google hits I've been getting.

The poem is based on a mythical character.

Evidently most all the other Biff Lane's listed by Google are mythical characters also.

What amazes me is that Biff Lane seems to be all over the place giving the near same TESTIMONIAL for all sorts of products and services.

Apparently all the sites are manufactured and registered through some outfit that has a cookie cutter way of doing business. - The companies listed above most likely are legit and I'm pretty certain the owners are a touch ignorant of the internet and how it works. I do wonder however about their allowing for phony testimonials. Couldn't they have gotten a few real customers to say something nice about them and used initials if they didn't want their name used on the internet?

Here is a news flash. (Dated: 05.28.2008)

BART has teamed up with the Contra Costa County Public Library system to set up a novel automated book-lending system that will launch Thursday at the Pittsburg/Bay Point station.

A vending-like machine located at the station will hold some 400 books that can be checked out for free by anyone with a valid Contra Costa County library card. A patron will insert the card, get access to the available titles and check out up to three books. A robotic arm will retrieve the books.

They must be returned to the book-lending machine within three weeks.

Now people no longer have to sit in a train on their way to work. They can travel the world and indeed the universe...

That is if the system provides Science Fiction...

That is if the riders enjoy books...

Be careful Contra Costians. Don't ride past your stop...

Liberal Jerk Calls ALL Anti-Obama Voters Racist!

Already the Pro-Obama camp is working to instill guilt into the hearts of those that oppose their candidate. Won't work with me and I'm certain that most voters going to the polls in November won't be fooled by it either.

Andrew Greely wrote in "A Fall election hinges on race"

And surely some of the explicit chatter during the campaign was racist, especially the obsession with the various clergy who mounted the pulpit of his church. By what stretch of sick logic could the candidate be responsible for what his clergy said and did?

And

The point is that racism permeates American society and hides itself under many different disguises. The nomination of an African-American candidate was a near-miracle. Only the innocent and the naive think that the November election will not be about race.

For one thing the church Barack Hussein Obama attended was and is racist. That is a fact and most blacks (as well as whites) that haven't had their minds twisted by their racist rhetoric will say so also. He could have gone down the street and found a church that preached the love of God instead of the hate of whitey. - Barak is not responsible for what his clergy said and did but he is responsible for sitting through it.

The excuses he has given while throwing his uncle pastor under the bus are weak at best.

The coming election will be about race in Andrew Greely's mind and also in the minds of people like him. These reverse racists think that they are the righteous ones because they "say" they see beyond the color of ones skin and ignore all flaws in the person. Who was it that said, "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."

I've judged the character of Obama and see a politician who lies. No different from Bill and Hillary. I look at Obama and I see a man who wants to drive our nation deeper into socialism. No different from Bill and Hillary. I look at Obama and I see a man who is not qualified and is lacking in judgment and common sense. At least Bill and Hillary have some of both.

No Mr. Greely I will not be voting for Obama. Call me a racist if you will but unreasoned hatred is not one of the reasons. I do not hate Barak nor does the majority of voters on the right. The man doesn't know what he has signed up for, totally lacks experience and the direction he wants to take the country is far from what the founding fathers had in mind for this great and wonderful land.

It has nothing to do with the color of his skin!

P.S. to Mr. Greely. When I had the chance I voted for Alan Keyes and not because he happens to be black. Did you?

Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed

Saw the Intelligent Design vs. Evolution film Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed and as I was leaving I asked another patron of the theater (unknown to me) what he thought of the film. His words were, "I thought it was brilliant."

I thought of the line in Ecclesiastes, "There is nothing new under the sun."

Ben Stein travels and interviews people from both sides of the theory aisle (evolution versus intelligent design) simply asking questions that show both sides have questions and many of their answers are couched in terms like "maybe" and "if".

Basically the film shows that the evolution crowd has pushed the ID'ers out of the classrooms and laboratories blackballing them from scientific research and research grants. Some evolutionists are sitting around wearing earmuffs and blinders and this while they are still forced to say "maybe" and "if" when questioned about the origins of life...

I saw it as showing the power struggle for control of the cash. - But then I'm a cynic.

Did a bit of running around the net before posting this and I came up with a couple spots that are worth viewing.

Six Things in Expelled That Ben Stein Doesn't Want You to Know... is a Scientific American article by John Rennie and Steve Mirsky which says in it's opening paragraph,

"In the film Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed, narrator Ben Stein poses as a "rebel" willing to stand up to the scientific establishment in defense of freedom and honest, open discussion of controversial ideas like intelligent design (ID). But Expelled has some problems of its own with honest, open presentations of the facts about evolution, ID—and with its own agenda."

- It does raise some good points but on the other hand lines like this in the article, "Thousands of other biologists across the U.S. who all know evolution to be true are also still religious." makes me wonder when they threw out the word "theory" when talking of evolution. Tsk, tsk. And this from a scientific journal.

The film shows that there is a controversy and that in the end the origins of life cannot be explained to the opposing layman's or scientist's satisfaction by either side. Ultimately the question is, should both sides be presented in public schools at taxpayers expense? Or should the views of one side be squashed and tossed into the outer darkness.

The Intelligence Design side is not looking to expel the Evolutionist's from the schools, They want both sides taught, yet the Evolutionists have expelled the ID'ers. Free debate is the issue and the film shows if taken to it's ultimate conclusion scientists would find themselves having to form a hypothesis after the world view of evolutionists as opposed to facts seen through a microscope.

What cracked me up in the film is seing scientists saying perhaps life started on Earth (Gaia) by aliens from other planets seeding it or that life started off on the backs of crystals. - Of course this makes much more sense than thinking that God IS and that He created, designed life and used materials common to all life to create different forms, species etc.

Oh! I forgot. There is no controversy. I forgot I was on my way to take a nap...

Clinging to Religion

Barack Hussein Obama, Jr's statement was:

"it’s not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren’t like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations."

I sort of have a problem with this statement. That is because it is a general statement that has no qualifying words to modify it to make it true. The word 'some' thrown in would have cut the fuse of the bomb it has become for Barack. Do we need a president that makes errors as simple as this?

Laying that aside I'd like to address the words (taken out of context) "they cling to ... religion..."

The way it was stated Barack makes it sound like a bad thing to want to cling to religion. Of course we do need to define religion and can have no way of knowing Barack's definition. There is more than one way to look at religion. One comparison could be either man bringing God (or gods) down to his level or God bringing man up to His. - I prefer the second.

Man can stretch his arms to drag God down and it will be to no avail. God has stretched His Arm down and given man the gift of his Son. As a gift Jesus now only needs to be received or rejected just as a child might do between a toy or a sweater.

As for me I'll 'cling' to my religion and I'll make no apologies for it. But then again, I'm a "Born Again" Christian not a "Social" Christian. Yes, good works, as Barack has been doing, are necessary but before that there needs to be a relationship with the Living God. With statements like the one Barack has made I question his relationship. Faith without works is dead but so is works without faith.

Slamming his brothers and sisters in the Lord is not a good way to generate votes.

But he never did have mine...

Acres of Books in Long Beach to Sell and Move

Looks like it is 'near' official - Acres of Books, a longtime hangout of bookaholics is searching for new digs. 240 Long Beach Blvd, Long Beach California will be turned over to redevelopers (the City of Long Beach Redevelopment Agency is brokering the deal) for "commercial space, housing and an art center where local works can be displayed and art-related events can be hosted".

2.8 million is the reported purchase price of the property which was owned by the store as opposed to their renting.

Evidently to the city a book store is not suitable for 'commercial space'. - Nor are books to be considered art...

"We are not planning on absolutely closing down," said Smith, co-owner of Acres of Books along with her husband Phil. "We are looking for a new location."

Their website posted:

Dear Customers and Friends of Acres of Books,

Jackie and I have negotiated the sale of our property, building and land at 240 Long Beach Blvd. Acres of Books has been there since my grandfather, Bertrand Smith, moved there in 1964. We still own the book store business, Acres of Books.

We had no choice but to deal with the City of Long Beach, Redevelopment Agency. Craig Beck and Carl Morgan, whom we worked very closely with, treated us in a business like manner, and helped to get us thru some very important issues.

The City is going to let us stay in their building one more year. This will give us a chance to have a couple of stock reduction sales, while we continue to look for a place to buy. We will not be able to have as much stock in a new building, even if we find one as big as we have now. The aisles will have to be twice as wide and not near as high. Oh well.

The deal is not quite final. The RDA will take up the 'issue' for 'approval with the RDA Board' April 21, 08.

Gazette.com reports,

At a recent downtown neighborhoods meeting, Mayor Bob Foster and City Manager Pat West were implored to save Acres of Books.

But the purchase of the Acres of Books site, and the block that surrounds it, is designed to clear the way for another project that has long been sought in the downtown - and "art exchange."

"We’re trying to create an art-themed building," Beck said. "We've talked with the community about an art exchange where artists could live and have galleries to sell their work, where there would be a residential component. We have talked to (California State University, Long Beach) about maybe doing some art student housing."

The goal of all of that would be to have a building that links the core of downtown with the East Village, Beck said.

He said that the RDA offered to have Acres of Books be a part of that, but Smith said that was not going to be a good fit. She said it was an emotional decision to move on.

Student Housing??? - Well with the students they are turning out these days they should have negotiated keeping the picture books...

The City of Long Beach, California might have utilized the term, 'Eminent Domain' in their negotiations with owners Phil and Jackie Smith or they might not have. I didn't see the words used in the news articles but I did see the methods cities have cultivated through the years to 'purchase' properties for 'pet projects'.

Recent brouhaha caused by the Barak Hussein Obama/Rev Wright comradeship has me wondering why it the broohaha recent? - Only because the MSM has not been doing their job concerning him.

20 years Barak has been going to the church and he is just now finding out how inflammatory his (now ex?) pastor is.

Gimme a break.

Non church goers might believe him but not people who regularly attend services. It's like a Muslum saying of his mosque, "I didn't know they spewed hate America and Jihadist teachings there. I just went to hear the music."

Once again we have a politician saying anything he thinks the people want to hear in order to be elected.

Fortunately fewer people are believing him.

What Would Jesus Do?

He'd come clean and fess up. He always did prefer the truth.

Once Again! The Lost Poetry Corner

Listed a bunch of "Unknown and Lost Poets" this weekend. I really mean UNKNOWN!!! - Googled the names of both books and authors, separate and together with quotes, without quotes and most didn't even register.

They used a vanity press and did not know how to market themselves. The copies I got are all like new 'review copies' that were sent to Dion O'Donnol because he did promote poets and poetry through various means. Newsletters, clubs etc... - All published in 1980.

Even so, after 28 years of no promotions, being manufactured prior to the Internet explosion these names are virtually unknown. So if I expect to sell the books I better promote them. - To quote Ralph Kramden, 'And Away We Go'.

The following Lost Poem comes from "Poetry to Remember" by Sara Webb Keaton - Publisher: Dorrance and Company - 1980 (First Edition, not stated) - All I could find other than the copy I have listed at my book store is three copies stuck in the bowels of Higher Education Libraries. (Saw them through WorldCat)

A bunch of different subjects are poeticized in this book but I'm a slow typist and am only going to give you one. This is one I liked.

Margin of Profit

"I'll trade my dog for your wagon,"
Said Tommy to big Biff Lane.
"And I'll throw in my football too
And also my watch and chain."

"I'll trade." said Biff, "I like your dog.
Come! Flash, old boy, now you're mine."

Self Promotion of Your Website

Trying to promote your website can be time consuming. I know because I haven't been working on it and my hits have dropped off. Part of that drop for this blog is my irregularity in posting. People come by for a week and see the same posting they stop coming by. Especially if your last posting was a poem on "The Hammer Throw".

Anyway. I was over at Bookshop Blog's Forum and posted the 'Self Promotion - Networking' thread the following piece. Rereading it before clicking 'post' I saw that this idea can be applied to websites and blogs other than just book sales.

Hope you can use this:

I listen to talk radio and on occasion call in. Only once have I had a chance to do it but ask the radio show host if you can promote/plug your website/bookstore over the air.

Don't just call in to plug away. Have a legitimate question or statement to make concerning the present topic being discussed on the show. Make sure it is legitimate because listeners can tell and you don't want them thinking you are just a self promoting jerk.

I find it best to make a couple notes with the show host's name, (don't want to mess that up!) any greeting the regular callers use, and your statement or question. - DON'T read off the paper into the telephone. It just doesn't work.

It also helps if the question or statement is semi-intelligent.

Weekends are a good time because they have shows of many topics and it is easier to get through when you call in. Find one that really interests YOU. You might find religious shows, computer shows, pet shows, cooking shows where you tie in your plug with some book titles you might have. You want to pick a show that interests you just in case the show host decides to engage you in conversation.

You might want to have a list handy of some 'tie in titles' just in case you get to talk books after the plug...

To make sure you don't get cut off before the plug and that you do get it in you can start the conversation with, "I've a question and if you don't mind I'd like to plug my website." (my business, my store, etc...) - Most show hosts will be gracious and let you do it.

- If you work it right the conversation might turn to books for a minute or so. You might want to have a list handy of some 'tie in titles' just in case you get to talk books after the plug... -

We are the children of the strong god Thor
We hurl his hammer through the hollow sky;
No task is this for feeble hands to try:
This is the sport that men and gods adore.

A giant race are we, who each in turn
Step in the magic circle's narrow ring
Around our heads the old god's hammer swing,
And send it whirling where the sunbeams burn.

Our fingers twine the handle tightly round,
Firm as a mountain oak we plant our feet,
With one long breath, filling each cell complete,
We lift and swing the dead weight from the ground.

Around our heads we swing with quickening speed,
The hot blood pressing in each swollen vein,
Each muscle corded with its mighty strain,
The handle bending like a river reed.

A step, a turn, and staggering, we hurl
The heavy hammer whistling through the air;
We watch it in the sunbeams fly and flare;

Little Book of SportsSports Poems from The Little Book Series

Came across a jewel of a book today. It combines two of my least favorite things. Poetry and Sports.

Well maybe 'least favorite' is overstated. Cleaning up after my dog is way above each of those.

Really, poetry is OK if it rhymes and says something. If I have to think about what it says it has lost me as a customer. But some people like that 'New Verse' so to each his own... I loved Hiawatha for example. Read the whole thing twice in my life. Might read it again someday. - And sports like baseball, basketball and football is great to watch if I'm tied in a chair with toothpicks holding my eyes open. I do like to watch gymnastics and snow skiing so I'm not against all sports...

Anyway. The pick of the week for my poetry posting is a neat little book called "The Little Book of Sports". Poetry compiled and edited by Wallace and Frances Rice. published by The Reilly & Britton Co, in 1910 and as stated in the title of this posting part of "The Little Book Series" whose other titles I've listed at the bottom of this post.

Thirty-two different sports listed in the Index of Sports and forty names listed in the Index of Authors. Seventy-seven poems total.

Some of the sports are Baseball (Casey at the Bat of course with 5 others.), Football (5), Hammer Throwing (1), Fishing (3), and Golf (8). Some are funny, some serious. - Of course I like the funny ones.

Here is a quick one on Cycling by John Joy Bell that shows that at the turn of the last century there was a different set of traffic problems...

I'd rather be a cyclist
Than any other beast,
For though he slays he never stays
upon the slain to feast.

It's pleasant to remember,
While lying on the stones,
How though you're dead, you needn't dread
That he will pick your bones.

Cold in L.A. California? Time To Use the Fireplace

Once in awhile it gets cold in L.A. This is how I handled it this year.

The temperature has been dropping into the 50's at night and this house seems to get even colder than it is outside at times. Well I figured it was just about time to do one of my husbandly duties. Something Wifeypoo will forever leave for me to do in spite of the Romantic Implications the Disney cartoon gives to the job.

Clean out the fireplace.

Now I know that this is something I should have done at the beginning of spring after the last time it was used and I would have done it too except the timing just didn't seem right to me somehow. Besides I wasn't sure, at the time, WHEN would be the VERY last time it would be used.

Plus I have the enviable ability to put things off and since I like people to envy me I figured this was just one more way to accomplish just that.

So! Now the timing was right.

Break out the SHOP-VAC!

Drag it into the house. (Sure glad it has wheels! It must weigh 8 pounds!) Junk drawer for extension cord. Move the screen aside, tilt the grate up and back, plug in the SHOP-VAC.

Contact!

Switch on!

(Whirring sound starts here!)

Suck up the ashes!

Wonder if Tim Allen could soup this baby up? - Whoa! - Don't think he'd need to. Look at this machine just suck the bricks clean!

Sure am glad that that last year I didn't use any wood with nails in it. When I cleaned it out last fall I had to deal with nails clogging the hose. This is great. Cinderella should have one of these pig machines. Then she wouldn't have to complain about working so hard and maybe even her evil and wicked step-sisters would be envious enough to do it for her. This is almost like fun. The corners need a bit more work than the middle. I should have done this last spring but then people would have said I don't have the enviable ability to put things off. I am raising a bit of ashes though. Not enough to worry about. 99.99% is going down the tube. But it is getting hard to breath with my head stuck in the fireplace. Maybe I should take a bit of a break.

OH NO!!!

What the???

I forgot to put the filter in the stupid shop-vac the last time I cleaned it!

Scheesh! What-a-mess!!!

Wow!

Good thing Wifeypoo and I have a deal.

I clean out the fireplace and she cleans the rest of the house...

Epilogue
Most of this story is true. I did stray a bit from reality while my head was stuck in the fireplace and I imagined the filter being off the shop-vac. At this point I looked behind me, was relieved to see all was OK and carried on with the work. The last sentence was what I imagined I would say to Wifeypoo.

We all know how that would have gone over.

Who then was this Gustave Dore?

The Terrible Gustave Dore by Hellmut Lehmann-Haupt - Apparently only two printings. - Marchbanks Press, NY, NY, 1943 & Greenwood Press, Westport, Conn, 1976 -

"Originated as a lecture given before the Groller Club in New York City on December 14, 1939" -

On the first page the author, Hellmut Lehmann-Haupt asks the question, "Who then was this Gustave Dore?" He goes on to ask, "What sort of life did he live? Was he a happy man and his life a rich one? What were his ambitions, his hopes and fears? What caused his early death?"

These are questions Helmut asked and sought answers for. He had grown up seeing and admiring pictures by Gustave in the Bible and Perrault Fairy tales long before he could read.

Dante and the Lion

Hellmut says in the paragraph after his questions, "On the following pages I have tried to answer these questions. My search has brought me close to Gustave Dore. He has become a friend. Perhaps you too will discover a friend in him."

25 Illustrations, some full page and some in text are scattered through the book plus there is a sample of his handwriting. A very good biography. - Quite a good book. -

The Virgin of Waikiki by Don Blanding

Here is a review of the poem/book "The Virgin of Waikiki" - A Torrid Tragedy of the Tropics by Don Blanding.

Don Blanding is well known for his tropical poetry and this little volume is a good example of his humorous verse writing abilities.

A nearing 40's spinster is the 'hot' topic of this steamy tropical ballad.

Every Author has his flippant moments, and it was such a mood that the Virgin of Waikiki was created. As the author explains "A tragedy as Poignant as Virgin Annie's could only be treated frivolously, thus sparing the heart strings of the reader".

Those who seek may find a Moral in this tale - - We say "may".

Quite a fun read until the "tragedy" part at the end. Can't say any more without spoiling it.

The forward by H.M.S. (Henry M. Snyder) says:

"At a recent dinner of the Wampus Club in Los Angeles, the author, Don Blanding of Honolulu was called upon to contribute to the entertainment. In responding he read his original poem, The Virgin of Waikiki.

It was felt that a number of appreciative souls who were not present at the reading of the poem were deserving of the pleasure which this rare and piquant piece affords to Epicurean literary tastes. For the benefit of this small circle of the cognoscenti an edition was privately printed "upon the altar of fellowship." This edition was quickly exhausted as was also a second printing. The present edition with illustrations by A. B. Butler, Jr. is the publisher's response to what seems to be a steadily growing demand for further copies.

What Lady Lou did for Alaska; what Kipling's Mandalay did for India, perhaps, indeed, this rollicking epic ballad of Virgin Annie may do for Hawaii."

In the back of the 1933, Henry M. Snyder edition there is a yellow envelope pasted in.

It has printed on it, "For sundry reasons the astonishing consummation of the ballad must be withheld, temporarily only -we hope- from further enjoyment of the reader." and two drawings of little angels (one obviously Hawaiian) with ukuleles.

It is my guess that the envelope was pasted in because the printery, Country Life Press, Garden City New York, discovered too late the omission of the copy and they had the unused envelopes on hand. - The DJ appears to be of the same material as the envelopes. I wonder if they had both bits of stock on the shelf and were glad to get rid of them. (8-P

The Bookshop Blog posted an article titled, "The fine art of Book Pricing."

Quite a good read for any bookseller and it has a few tips for books that are "one of a kind". - I've come across a few that I just can't find through Google or Yahoo. Just a couple days ago I found I own "Hooray for a Roue'" by H.R. Washburne. Could only find a single reference that was really a dead link from some joker of a booksales site that had the title listed but no book for sale.

Well that told me that someone else out there had at least heard of the book. I wasn't holding a figment of my imagination. I saw the title on the internet so I knew it must exist. It is book of poetry that I will soon be listing. Unless I misplace it in one of my stacks...

I started working on the author's name and in my search I came across WorldCat.org.

I was too slow in getting this resource I've found over to the good folks at The Bookshop Blog for them to post it in the article so I left the following in their comments.

Here is another Handy Dandy Book Resource I found just recently.

They have a toolbar search engine you can load on to the top of your browser page. Just type in the tile or author and it takes you to the page you want. - Lists Libraries that carry the book and tabs can (hopefully) take you to other info that is helpful.

Sign up and in your profile you can link to your website and blogsite. Create lists of books you like and check out profiles of other people with similar tastes. That is if they don’t have their profile private which you can do too if you prefer the anonymity.

As occasion and time permits you can add to their site the table of contents and/or a short synopsis/review of a book which might (or might not) get people to check your profile and go to your website.

I’ve seen some books where they give the printing history which can be very helpful too.

So far I’ve found it helpful and have found a couple books listed that it was difficult and/or impossible to find on Google or Yahoo.

The Angel and The Star By Ralph Connor

A well written Christmas story giving personality and dialog to the descriptions found in Luke. It is divided into two sections. The first called,

"The Angel" and the second, (you guessed it!) The Star.

The first section is the story as told from the shepherd's point of view and the second of the Magi as they travel through Jerusalem and on to Bethlehem.

Throughout the book there are nine color illustrations in line with the stories. (1908 Fleming H. Revell Company hardcover - Can't speak for all editions)

Paintings reproduced through the letterpress process have been bound in with the pages. The pictures are by Cyrus Cincinnatto Cuneo (1879 - 1916), whose work has drawn over $30,000 at auction, and they add quite a bit of character to this little volume.

A few copies are available online for reasonable prices. If you decide to purchase a copy you may want to write to the sellers in advance and make sure that the issue they are selling has all 9 pictures in it. There was both an American and Canadian printing and I have only the American one in hand.

I hope to post a few pics a bit later. Time for me to go to work...

Summary of the 2007 Messiah Concert in Temecula/Murrieta

Each year dozens of people that love to sing spend time practicing in small groups, join together for one group practice and then put on a concert that is enjoyable, uplifting, delightful and a whole slew of positive adjectives.

This has happened in Temecula/Murrieta California for untold years now and is a free event. This year the organizers refused to take an offering. I did not hear the reason why but I think it may be because they feel that they are giving to God freely that which He deserves. - That is, music honoring Him.

Thanks to Madge and Chuck Griffing for their labor to bring each year's concert to fruition.

Handel's Messiah is one classical music piece that is enjoyed by people of all faiths although Christians versed in scriptures of both Testaments seem to be the majority of audiences. Perhaps because it is most often played in churches.

This year a thanks goes to Calvary Chapel, Murrieta, CA for offering the use of their facilities. Wonderful building with great acoustics. Wonderful building for worshiping and praising God. Which is what the musicians and singers did on the first Sunday of December.

The entire oratorio now names, Handel's Messiah was written in just 24 days. This is most impressive if one looks at it in it's entirety. The singers, bass, tenor, alto, Soprano (Sopranos deserve a capital letter!) are often individually singing different pieces of music from the rest of the group. The instruments have their own sheets of music that would only confuse most of the singers if the pages were mixed up.

Altogether, if the notes were placed on their sides and laid end to end it would only stretch halfway to heaven. - However! Standing up straight and in the jiggly lines Handel wrote them in they reach all the way!!!

A remarkable feat is what I say.

Regarding this years event
prying1 sez:

The concert went well this year except for an occasional misunderstanding of directions from the conductor.

At certain points in time the conductor would motion for a soloist to rise and step forward. Some of the singers rose too. That would get other singers to rise thinking they had missed the signal. Then those that rose in error would realize their mistake and sit back down. Those that followed the standing process then followed the sitting process. At this point the ones that didn't join in at first would now stand and sit.

Needless to say it resembled a wave at a baseball game...

That aside the music was wonderful and please plan on attending next year. - The first Sunday in December.

I'll remind you.

Hopefully the three young girls that sang The appearance of the Angel to the shepherds will be there next year. Such angelic voices! One of the highlights of the show.

Speaking of highlights I heard (this is hearsay) that some of the more youthful musicians were recruited from local High Schools and this affords them an opportunity to join in with more experienced musicians. - It sure didn't sound like any High school band I've ever heard. - I'm sure they were as thrilled playing the music as I was listening.

For many it is the start of the Christmas Season. For me Christmas Season really seems to start when the practices start. The Performance kicks it into gear and fires up the afterburners.

Bring on the fat man in the funny suit. I'm ready for him.

A special thanks to Gawfer, Political Pistachio and their families for attending this year. It was great meeting you all and I only wish we had more time to spend together.

Perhaps next year we can get you to join in the choir!

Can a City Stop you From Web Linking to Their Site?

Here is an interesting question: Can a city stop a private citizen from putting a link on their website to a city website?

The question arises over a Sheboygan, Wisconsin case where a woman who is often critical of the town mayor was ordered by the city to remove a city website link from her own pages. Yes, you heard me correctly… ORDERED to remove that link. The Sheboygan Press posted the story a week or so ago and it got me thinking about the abuse of power indulged in by this small Wisconsin town.

In a move initiated by Perez, City Attorney Steve McLean sent a cease-and-desist letter earlier this month to Jeni Reisinger, who was among the leaders of a mayoral recall effort last year, officials acknowledged Friday.

The letter, dated Oct. 19, states, "maintenance of this link could be construed as having been authorized or endorsed by the city and/or its police department" and should be removed “until such time as the city were to authorize such a link."

This has to be a joke, right? A city attorney who has the gall to attempt to force a private citizen to remove a link to public city website should be summarily removed from his position. Further, if he was put up to this outrageous action by Mayor Juan Perez, then this mayor should similarly be removed.

Of course, this city government is being run by a bunch of bumbling nitwits, here. Of that none can deny. But, the situation is galling none-the-less. If this city can prevent people from linking to a public service, then what else can they strong-arm the public over? Can the city decide that, forthwith, all people critical of office holders should receive a “cease and desist” letter? Maybe no one should even be "allowed" to run against them for office from this point onward? The arrogance of this is shocking, to say the least.

The next thing you know, every city will look like the mob infested city of Chicago, run by the criminal enterprise we call the Daley family!

In any case, if the City of Sheboygan is so afraid of people visiting their webpages then why have them at all? Now, if you’d like to go to their sites and ask a few questions, you can see them here:

War On Global Warming A Success!

(From ACK News Service) June 23, 2012 - Today, Gene Poole, AlGore's right hand person, announced that the war on global warming has been won. Said Mr. Poole through his secretary, Helen Back:

"We've finally managed to get a controlling hold on greenhouse gases. The earth is now cooling and doing so faster than we anticipated. In fact so much so that large sections of the jungles in South America, Africa and Asia are dying off for lack of carbon dioxide. The growth of the ice packs and glaciers is not helping either. We are now directing our efforts at getting people to leave a larger carbon footprint. Mr AlGore is doing his part by leaving all the lights on in all his mansions 24 hours a day. We politely request everyone on earth do the same. Oh! And if you must fly please do so in a private jet. Thank you.

Ileane Left, spokesperson for 'No More Carbon', an environmentalist group, said, "We didn't know that all life on Mother Earth is carbon based. I blame it on our school system for not teaching us that. Sorry for the damage we've done. But no, we are not giving back the donations we've collected. We will need that money to rent private jets."

The headline where I got this story from says, "California, other states sue U.S. on car emissions" - It is a Reuters story by Adam Tanner. Whoever he is. I think my title is more accurate. Here is a bit from the story as Reuters say's it:

California sued the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday, demanding a quick federal decision that would allow the nation's most populous state to limit greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles.

"California is ready to implement the nation's cleanest standards for vehicle emissions, but we cannot do that until the federal government grants a waiver allowing us to enforce those standards," Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said.

The long-threatened legal action follows a 2005 California law requiring new vehicles to meet tighter standards for emissions, starting with 2009 models introduced next year.

California needs a waiver from the federal government because it is seeking to impose stricter standards than those imposed under federal law. The legal filing asks the court to force a EPA decision on the matter.

If the EPA denies the waiver, "we sue again, and sue again, and sue again until we get it," Schwarzenegger told reporters.

Oh well. Guess Stephen L. Johnson, the Administrator of the EPA can't hear me in Washington since I'm way out here on the Left coast...

Here is my answer anyway.

I'd first of all like the people of California to recognize that their governor is acting outside of his field. He has been listening to people that have only told him one side of the issue. There is a multitude of Real Scientists, not the social engineering types or those dependent on government grants who disagree with the so called global warming issue. He needs to throw their voices into the mix before he spends your taxpayer dollars on lawyers.

The waiver is denied because those money grubbing, so called environmentalists (Let's do a study on where they get their pocket change) are attempting to pass rules that the automotive industry is not quite ready to meet. They will then demand the automotive industry pay fines for not meeting the said requirements. Then they will take the money and buy fancy cars that pollute. Fancy cars that the normal Californian cannot afford because of high taxes.

To hell with them. Let them go out and get a real job. The lawyers can go chase ambulances and the environmentalists can go plant a tree and hug it.

Chili Cookoff 2007!

On October 31st our church holds a 'Harvest Party' as an alternative to children getting hopped up on sugar handed out by strangers while everyone is wearing outlandish costumes. We still have outlandish costumes but eschew demonic types and pass out enough sugar products to keep the kids hopped up for a month if they learn about being frugal which I doubt they do...

At least they are not getting it from strangers

Every year for this event we have a Chili Cook-Off for those egotistical enough to think they are best at at least one thing in life. I'm one of those...

I mentioned on a bulletin board I got the third prize ribbon (yellow) this year and a request was made for the recipe.

Here it is.

OK - prying1's famous 3rd place chili -

(lower case letters in the title to keep me humble even though third place does that nicely)

Cooked in a crock pot on the lower setting all day.

Figure 45 mins. to an hour prep time unless you get the stuff ready and set out the night before. (Meat can be cooked the night before but ATTN MEN: put it COVERED in the fridge overnight if you do cook it in advance!)

I cooked two pounds of hamburger meat (my daughter caught me checking the ingredients on a couple cans of dog food and told me not to take the short cut. I was cooking for the church contest and not for a fire station...)

I threw some garlic powder (crushed garlic cloves will work), chili powder, ground cumin, ground coriander, paprika, 1 chopped medium onion, and about a dozen chopped mushrooms in with the meat as it was cooking and stirred it around once in a while.

While it cooked I turned on the crock pot, (after I washed it of course. It had been sitting in the cupboard for a while...) took two cans of whole peeled tomatoes and smushed them up in the crock pot (watch for squirting juice - do not wear your Sunday clothes) then I added the beans.

4 types of beans. In this batch I used 2 DRAINED cans each (This is a BIG crock pot - you might have to adjust down a bit)
Kidney Beans - Pinto Beans - Black Beans - White beans - (Integration is the key especially if you have a multicultural/multiracial group you are feeding) - Black eye peas or other types of favorite DRAINED canned beans can be substituted or added. - I stirred as I added them in haphazard order so they would be mixed up real well. - As an alternative you can use dried beans but only if you soak them overnight and drain the water. Do not try to cook the dried beans without soaking. I know this from experience. It makes for crunchy chili. Something the judges abhor. I learned this the same way I learned to cook and DRAIN the meat first before putting it in the pot. (a slice of bread or two can soak off excess grease)

It is easy to overflow the pot and we still have the burger meat to contend with so watch the level and stop before it gets too high.

I added more of the same spices into the crock pot as the above ingredients added to the meat but this time dolloped in some liquid smoke (go easy with it) and Worcestershire sauce. OH! I found a can of chopped olives and threw that in too. - Some green bell pepper would have added color but I didn't have any handy.

At this point I drained the meat concoction. (Does that sound appetizing? Perhaps I should do a thesaurus search for a better word than concoction?)

Pour the meat in while stirring to mix it up. - Get clean spoon and taste a bite - Add more of whatever spice it needs. I added some tomato sauce because it wasn't red enough. - DON'T add salt. There should be plenty in the canned beans. - At this point the flavors would not have melded and it will not taste finished. Just make sure it has flavor and doesn't taste like just plain cold beans. - Don't double dip! Wash the spoon if you need another taste.

Slap on lid. Go to Work. Remember to come home and don't stop off to 'relax' for too long. Drive carefully so you don't get dragged off to jail only to come home 3 days after it is finished. If that happens even on the low setting the beans will get mushy...

Limbaugh's Letter and Funny Comments.

My regular readers know I value Warner Todd Huston's postings. - Not that we think 100% alike but rather there is a kinship of spirit, An esprit de corp that I feel with the guy. - It may or may not be reciprocated. Doesn't matter. I feel it and, as a person that knows 'feelings' can be dangerous bedfellows (they are subject to change) I'll still go ahead and run with it.

Well, Warner's posting on ABC Tries To Credit Democrats for Rush’s $2 Million Ebay Letter! led me to a nonsensical ABC Blog posting that has quite a few comical comments.

ABC's last line in their article, "The bidding ends at 1:00p.m. No mater what, Democrats are going to make a ton of money for a charity off their political vitriol." brought quite a bit of ridicule in comments from those not only on the right side of politics but even a few from the left that recognize truth when they don't hear it.

I stopped being a Democrat the minute Bill Clinton shook his finger at the camera stating that he did not have sex with "that" woman. The main reason was that the media was obviously not reporting, what so many people, including myself now know, the real truth. In this case, it is so brazenly obvious that the Senate Democrats are not only lying to the public on the senate floor on national TV... but, they are making &$^*# out of themselves expecting that smart people will believe it. Does Harry Reid actually believe that anyone believes his dribble? His sole purpose was to garner support to remove Rush from the airwaves, much like what was done to Imus, period. To believe that Harry Reid, et al care about the troops is to believe in the tooth fairy.

Ask yourself, if the Senate Majority Leader is so willing to lie with a bold face on national TV about a private citizen...that doesn't scare you as to what they might do with the Presidency? One of their own major camgaign donors, if you remember, stated that Hillary lies with such ease that it is down right scary. Anyone remember who was recently praising Hugo Chavez...and how easily he came to power?...and what he has done the civil liberties of private Venezuelans? I am just amazed that anyone with half a brain can take Senator Reid seriously...much less report it as such.

What was left out of this article is so telling. What happened to the 5 w's? You missed a bit.

WHO were the 'phony Soldiers' Rush was talking about. - They were not the people your organization portrayed them to be.

WHAT was in the letter the democrats signed about? What did it say? - A simple link to the auction would allow people to read it for themselves.

WHY did Reid send the letter? Was it just tit-for-tat as this article leads one to believe?

WHERE is the ridicule for Harry Reid in this article? His statement, "But without qualification Mark May, the owner of the network that has Rush Limbaugh, and Rush Limbaugh should know that this letter that they're auctioning is going to be something that raises money for a worthwhile cause." is ridiculous!

Fairness Doctrine Stinks!

Was reminded today that the fairness doctrine is being bandied about as a viable solution to the woes of leftdom.

Did a Google search of the news on it to see what's up. You know. To get both sides of the issue.

Found one piece from "The Vanguard - a Student Run Newspaper" (Portland State) - Jesse Thiessen wrote a piece and titled it,

"Let 'em say what they want" with the subtitle,
"Reinstatement of the Fairness Doctrine would regulate radio broadcasting to death"

First I would like to comment that the article was well thought out and written. The last student newspaper article I read had mis-spellings and poor use of punctuation. But that was a different (read IVY LEAGUE) school. - Rest assured I'm not an English major but nothing jumped out at me as I read the article. Except that Jesse Thiessen has common sense. Plus he did a bit of research to write the piece.

If he desires a job in any writing capacity I think he should find little trouble getting it. Unless he gets blackballed...

One thing not mentioned is "Air America".

The left tried to 'entertain' the citizens of this great land and failed miserably. Perhaps people can hear comparisons of Bush and Hitler only so many times before switching to the sappy, love song stations. I tried to listen to their hosts reflecting their points of view and found them boring at best.

If the left really wanted to hear opinions they agreed with they could have and should have listened to their own. They didn't, Air America failed and now they want the rest of the U.S.A. to suffer as a result?

The term 'rectal apertures' comes to mind...

SO I go there and see that Old Bush Baby is at it again. Now the President that was never legally elected (twice) wants to slaughter wolves so that elk hunters can have more elk to massacre. Bunch of gun nuts every one of 'em.

First I notice there are no dates, no House or Senate numbers. Nothing leading the visitor to any outside news source. There is a "send a message" button so I click on it.

BINGO! A number to Google.

So I Google RIN 1018-AV39 and find 246 hits, Some from Foreign Countries (Why would they be writing to our EPA?) and the second hit is for EPA.GOV -

Going through the gobbledygook I find this piece of info I can understand:

I've no doubt that the email addresses collected by the NRDC ACTION FUND will have a "GIVE US MONEY" message in them ten seconds after the sucker fills out the spaces and pushes the 'Send This Message' button. Then try to get them to stop sending messages or from selling the address to their buddies...

I know I'm a skeptic but one thing I'm not skeptical about is most of funds the NRDC ACTION FUND receives will go into deep pockets. And wolves don't have pockets.

Originally it seemed to be Blogmad.net was at fault but a company that was utilized by Blogmad has been taken over by nasty people at a place called Adbazz.

Some business owners got a shocking surprise today when their websites were being redirected to an Adbaaz.com URL. Former customers of Websourced (also known as Keyword Ranking and Marketsmart Interactive) are being redirected to this URL if an old tracking code still exists on their sites.

Websourced eventually abandoned the project but this code has remained on many of client’s web sites with no adverse affect until now.

Find the code (See boldinteractive.com's posting - Click on the link above) delete the code and you will get your website back. - Good luck! - I deleted my blogmad source code but that didn't quite do it. Off to find the problem and really fix it so you can read this.

Update: I found another little bit of Blogmad code on my sidebar. Cleared it out and no more redirect. Hooray!

Wrote to blogmad.net to direct their attention to the Bold Interactive posting (liinked above) and was told the address I have is no longer used or read. Have to go to the site and take a ticket on their complaint page. Went to their site and SHAZAMMMM! A redirect to adbazz.com - So it goes.

MoveOn.org, Democrats and Micromanaging the War

While reading a Publius Forum article on the senate vote to condemn the MooooveOn's advert against General Petraus I noticed that Presidential candidate Barack Hussein Obama (D-IL) abstained from voting. I was wondering if he was there and passed on voting or if he was not on the floor. Apparently he was in Washington. - MSNBC reported, "But curiously absent from the vote was Senator Barack Obama of Illinois, also a Democratic candidate for president, who had canceled a campaign appearance in South Carolina so he could be in Washington for votes." - Thats all I found. Doesn't really say he was on the floor or not.

If he wasn't there for whatever reason I'd like to know what he would have voted and if he was there I'd like to hear his excuse for abstaining.

While seeking the answer as to whether our illustrious Presidential wannabe was there and was showing the world that he is truly wishy-washy I came across a bit that shows once again that some lefties refuse to learn from history. Or do they??? - Perhaps it is history that they utilize to form and shape their tactics. Micromanaging the Vietnam war worked real well for the lefties.

CBS News dot com has this in an article labeled "MoveOn Unfazed By Furor Over Ad" -

And it (Moveon) turned its criticism squarely back on the Senate, accusing it of "spending time cracking down on a newspaper ad" after failing on Wednesday to pass a bill lengthening the home leaves of U.S. troops fighting in Iraq, a bipartisan measure that some regarded as pressuring Bush into limiting the redeployment of U.S. forces.

OK folks! - Which one of the MoveOn folks is the military expert that wants to micromanage the war?

My interpretation of his statement is, "Let's leave the Iraqis to be savaged by their neighboring terrorist nations and leave a hole in the middle east for terrorists to thrive." Responsible mission = sit at home and hope they go away...

If only Bush would talk to the terrorists and try to understand them.

Monday Campaign Notes - 9/10/2007

Some readers may not have realized that I have actually been running a word-of-mouth campaign since January 6, 2007. There have been some recent entries into the race for President, and there have been a lot of developments since then. I though it might be a good idea to go over some of the reasons I am running for President.

Other readers, having been with me and supporting me from the beginning, may recognize these words, since they were in my original post declaring my candidacy.

I can hear you wondering, "Cary, what do you know about running the country?"

I know enough not to let armed invaders get away without some ventilated clothing.

I know enough not to let non-citizens claim rights under our constitution.

I know enough not to allow illegal immigrants to benefit from the hard work of the American citizens and legal immigrants.

I know enough to actually assign jobs to people trained in the area, and then get the h3ll out of their way while they do the job to the best of their ability.

I know enough that unless this country gets a leader with the intestinal fortitude to actually lead this country instead of letting other country's public opinion dictate the leaders' actions, this country won't exist for very long.

I promise to look after THIS country's best interests first. Yes, there will be some hard rows ahead, but what doesn't kill you will only make you stronger.

Now, this is not a full listing of my stand. I have many entries over the last few months (for example, here, here, here, here, and most of all here)

As I said, this is a word-of-mouth campaign. I need everyone who reads this to help me get the word out. Tell everyone you know to "Write In Cary Cartter for President in 2008!"

But, this campaign needs help. Lots of help. Each state where I will be a write-in candidate needs me to file with them the names of electors from that state. The electors will travel to the electoral college after the November 2008 election, and cast their vote for me as the candidate. Travel is reimbursed, if that makes a difference. Then there are the states that don't accept write-in candidates for the office of President. My name needs to appear on the ballot on those states. I will need, besides electors, people willing to circulate and file petitions for my name to appear on the ballot.

All of these positions would be on a volunteer basis. As mentioned, travel to the electoral college would be reimbursed.

This campaign is running on word of mouth and no expenditures - and no contributions are being solicited. If enough volunteers can get together and cause a grass-roots swelling happen, then Cary Cartter can be elected President of the United States in November 2008.

The Hoosier Schoolmaster by Edward Eggleston

Once again I'm posting on a book that can be had for relatively cheap. I've found a few on Amazon and eBay plus going through Bookfinder.com Author: - Edward Eggleston - Title: - The Hoosier Schoolmaster - there are a few copies at various booksellers.

My copy is not for sale today but it might be someday. It seems like a keeper but someyear I might decide to release it to the wild. Space will be the issue at that date... - Addendum to this line. - I started this posting before I finished the book. I've finished reading it tonight... It is staying in my personal library and my daughter will have to deal with it after Jesus takes me home. -

One thing I will suggest is writing to the book seller in advance of purchase and making sure you get the "revised" edition (1892 and 'perhaps' after) with the authors footnotes. (More on that later. Plus it might be cheaper than a "First Edition".) - The story can also be had for free at Project Gutenberg but you will have to suffer through reading it on your computer screen or printing it out, which could be more expensive than buying it used (depending on your printer).

Figure this one out. a 2006 copy for $134.33 and on Alibris there is an 1899 copy available for $3.95 Plus S&H - I wrote to the $134.33 seller and asked, "Why so much? Typo???" - No reply!!! - Beware of rectal apertures! They will rob you!!! -

The Hoosier Schoolmaster by Edward Eggleston - (my copy) 1899, Grosset and Dunlap NY - HB/no DJ - 281 pages - w/ B&W Illustrations (with Character Sketches by F. Opper and other Illustrations by W.E.B. Starkweather) - Missing flyleaf which might have had some interesting names to Google...

"Want to be a schoolmaster, do you? You? Well, what would you do in Flat Crick deestrick, I'd like to know? Why, the boys have driv off the last two, and licked the one afore them like blazes. You might teach a summer school, when nothin' but children come. But I 'low it takes a right smart man to be schoolmaster in Flat Crick in the winter. They'd pitch you out of doors, sonny, neck and heels, afore Christmas."

So starts a fascinating story of a young man whose decision to be a schoolmaster of a rural district in 1851 Indiana seems to be doomed before he is even hired.

Written in the dialect of Middle America of the time it is filled with many of the characters, personalities, emotions and complexities of life mankind has known since Adam's fall. Plus it is a good story.

Going through a few online bookseller's sites I came across one whose advice I did not agree with. I saw a few of the more experienced sellers telling a newbie seller that had recently 'inherited' a lot of books (2500 or so) to dump all the 'Book of the Month Club' books and and only hold onto those books that had a higher value. - One said only keep those that could be sold for at least seven dollars while another said they would not sell their time so cheaply and held onto only ten dollar and up books...

To those so called 'sellers' I say, "Shame on you!!!"

What is selling if it is not giving value to someone that is willing to pay for it. I've sold three books in one eBay auction that could have been purchased for $1.00 each (Plus S&H) and got my ten dollars. Difference is: 1.) Buyer was willing to pay more for the convenience of one transaction instead of three and 2.) I advertised I would pay the S&H (my cost $2.50 or so - Media Mail - U.S. only). Nothing tacked on unless they wanted insurance or faster shipping method (book rate is real slow). A bonus in a sense because a lot of book buyers hate the shipping costs and a lot of sellers jack up the shipping to cover 'costs'...

So three or four of those BOMC books can and will bring in the $10.00 with the proper salesmanship applied. With BOMC listings I 'might' mention that they are getting more popular with budget minded book collectors. This is because it is one way to 'possibly' get an older, earlier edition, depending on the date of publication of course, for considerably less. In fact I've seen the BOMC embossed dot on stated "First Editions". (on the back cover the BOMC might emboss or indent a large period near the bottom to identify it as having been sold by/through the BOMC - This is generally done when the copies are not newly printed with BOMC on the copyright page.)

But I digress.

Back to The Hoosier Schoolmaster.

This book has gone through several printings. It was popular up to the 1950's. The author originally printed a major part of the the story through his newspaper as a serial. He was encouraged to expand it a bit and make a book out of it. Since then it was printed in England (no residuals to the author) translated into other languages (Still no residuals) and republished several times.

That is when you know that the book you hold is a good one. - The majority of books are never republished. Supply and demand is the only reason for a book to be republished. Except perhaps for 'Professors' who demand their students purchase books they authored as a class requirement. - Even then I guess supply and demand is still in force.

Have I digressed again?

The characters in this first work by Edward Eggleston are not unforgettable. He had a way of bringing out their hopes, fears, and loves be they selfish or other-centric. Be they good or evil. Be they sane or... Well some of the demented ones still had hopes, fears and/or loves (see 'selfish' listed above). And some of those we will find outside of the 'poor house'.

Eggleston, in the revised edition, took many of the words and sayings of 1850's Indiana and broke them down with an etymological explanation which I found fascinating. As I've stated before I love words and the English language. Through the footnotes Added in the revised edition you can learn quite a bit. Some might find them distracting and if so can read the book while ignoring the footnotes then perhaps through a second reading check them out. Well worth having the revised edition because of this feature.

Plus the revised has the "Preface to the Library Edition" which helps explain the goings on during the 21 years from original publication. One of the things he says in this is that people remember him for this, his first novel, and don't know or care that he feels he has done better since. I am going to keep my eyes open for more of his works in my collection and will report to you if I find something worth posting on.

Don't You Just Hate It?

True Story:

Wifeypoo & I are having an argument. It ends though when we figure out that we've been agreeing with each other from the beginning. We were just using different words to express the same thing.

Hey!!! We were both right.

It's so satisfying to end an argument that way.

- While posting this I discovered that typing "ARGUEMANT" gets the squiggly red line underneath that shows it is mis-spelled.

So I've mis-spelled the word and know I've been doing so for years. Google search pulls up a number 23 for the hits (prying1 "arguement") But I know some of those are duplicated and some are from pages where other people mis-spelled it but my name was involved because I was a commenter or innocent bystander.

Only ten times tops! Don't believe me? I'd like to argue all day over it but I don't want to start an arguement. Oops! - That's eleven.

Dictionary.com expects me to change my evil ways and spell it "ARGUMENT".

Now! Should I continue mis-spelling it or straighten up my act?

Gus the Great

A book review of Gus the Great by Thomas W. Duncan - 1947 (first editions will be 'stated' This was reprinted and became a BOMC.) J. B. Lippincott Company

One thing people should think about when faced with a decision of purchasing a used book. - Am I purchasing this as/for a collector's copy? Never to be read but to sit on a shelf. A shrine of sorts. To be adored as such. - OR - Am I purchasing this for enjoyment to be read, handled, perhaps smudged a bit more than it already was before I picked it up?

Ok. That's two things. To quote someone else that once made a mistake, "So sue me!".

I would suggest purchasing Gus the Great for the second reason. It will never attain much value as a collectible issue even in it's first state with a fine, fine, super fine book jacket and signed by the author.

So I just purchased a library. I'm looking to sell 95% of the books. And now I'm posting on a ratty covered book that I can find on eBay for less than 5 bucks (shipping included) or could hopefully come across in a thrift store for a dollar.

Whyzat???

Because I enjoyed reading it and think that others might also.

I hated doing book reports in school but now I find myself doing the same of my own volition. - For what it is worth. Here it is.

This book starts out with a fat man, one that had recently been fast losing weight, (Wattles exquisitely described as author paints pictures with words in an artistic manner. - Much painted in this book is prettier than this picture...) CAREFULLY approaching a piece of land described in the first sentence as having "elephants buried on it". Yet this is not Africa. It is in the middle of the U.S.A..

We learn that this is Gus. "Augustus Howard Burgoyne", who was named after two men, one of which was definitely his father.

From here the book goes back in time. With a brief pause here and there, to the late 1800's, through the story of the birth, beginnings, early adolescence, young to old life of Gus.

Here is a likable, lovable man who never read, or if he did read never understood the 10 Commandments. Boisterous and influential. A leader who often drew people into situations that would cost them. The kind of person that if you met him you would like and want to be friends with but you would be smart to stay away from if it meant money out of your pocket. A con artist with a good heart.

From his low beginnings Gus rises to that position he dreamed of as a child. A successful circus owner. - Hence the elephants in the first sentence.

But what is success without scruples?

Often humorous and even more often than we like to admit to ourselves and others this book shows a side of life that includes us all. - Whether we want to admit it or not... - Somewhere in this book every person on the planet is brought forth and paraded for all to see. There is even a printer, as I am, in it. Actually two or three of 'em but I don't think all of 'em are like me.

I would suggest that those who enjoy fiction, romance and humor purchase the book. This books deals with the late 1800's to early 1900's America. A time frame that went from horse to auto, gas to electric, telephone, movies, and so many more changes.

YET! men's hearts remained the same...

Thomas W. Duncan worked hard on writing and this book shows it. - Going through the timeline you will ask questions and at the last sentence ALL will be answered. - Very well written and should be considered a classic.

prying1 rating: Four Thumbs Up (Don't ask about my rating system. I have not figured it out yet. When I do I'm sure 'Four Thumbs Up' will be very high up there. - Just get the book and read it at your convenience. Hopefully you will find it in a thrift shop and not have to pay shipping.

Monday Campaign Notes - 8/27/2007

It has been a while since I last issued a "Monday Campaign Note" - something that was mentioned to me yesterday while talking with Douglas Gibbs. On the bright side, I was able to spend almost an hour in conversation with someone who had the same Christian-based world-view that I do, which was most enjoyable. Thanks, Doug.

Oh, yeah - campaign stuff.

The reason for Doug's call is that he needed to bump me from my scheduled September 1, 2007 appearance on his Blog Talk Radio Show for a very interesting guest. I told him that anytime he has a guest that needs a slot that I was scheduled for, please feel free - I'm very flexible, and it is his show. But especially, if the guest is one that can maybe expose some more of the mindset that we are fighting against in this World War on Terror.

So, I've been rescheduled. Won't you give a listen and call in? Details are in the rescheduled link.

Immigration - what a tempest!

I received an e-mail from NumbersUSA regarding the current crop of Career Politicians and their cough"stance"cough on the flow of legal immigrant workers to be hired by US companies, in order to depress the level of wages these companies need to pay. After the illegal invader issue, this is going to be a hot button topic. At least, it should be. By increasing the numbers of legal immigrants that are being brought in to specifically fill jobs that otherwise would go to a citizen at a higher (read: more fair) pay rate, the overall level of wages will be depressed, causing our economy to continue to spiral downward toward the class split that the economists and liberal think is best for this nation.

I am not against legal immigration. I'm all for it. But not to flood the work market with lower-earning workers to bring the overall wage level down. That's just counter-productive. There is a fine line between paying a competitive wage and not finding enough workers for your business. I'm no expert, but I believe that if a business can pay a wage that will draw workers to it, even in competition with other, more highly skilled positions, then that business will be successful. A company that is more interested in paying it's owner or CEO more than Midas ever saw deserves to have labor problems, and even face the market truth of "Be Competitive or Be Forgotten." Actually, that's something I just made up. But it does have a ring of truth, doesn't it?

Now, if you've read this far, perhaps you are wondering just where I'm coming from. A little further down are links that will take you to my platform.

Acronym Finder and Salesmanship

Twice this week I had to use an online Acronym Finder because idiots assume every one reading their words (and initials for their words) will automatically know what they mean. (I prefer the one at FreeDictionary.Com - Extra buttons to switch to assorted searches. - dictionary. medical, law, idioms etc.)

Both times this was for ads for items these idiots want to sell.

Sad! Sad! Sad!

One was on eBay - 'NOS' - For a car part. No explanation and it fit nothing in context. What the heckll was that supposed to mean? NOS???

Had to look it up.

So I found it meant, "New Old Stock".

Well that fit what I was looking to sell so I used it on four different car parts I listed. - EXCEPT - I explained the acronym so that there was no question as to what I meant. I wrote in the description of my items:

"NOS (New old stock) in (timeworn) box NEVER attached to any vehicle"

No misunderstanding there and after someone has visited my listing on eBay they are enlightened. Took me a few extra finger punches on the old keyboard and with cut and paste it showed up fine in all the ads...

Hopefully the next time some idiot comes along and 'ass u me s' visitors will understand their use of 'NOS' with no explanation a few of people that visited mn site will see the advert and give homage to prying1 for the lights dancing in their heads.

The other acronym I will post here if and when I get a reply from the seller...

Salesmanship!

Where has it gone?

I get phone calls from people reading off a paper in a monotone voice that is screaming, HANG UP ON ME!!! YOU DON'T WANT THE CRAP I'M SELLING!!!

I read adverts on auction and book selling sites that tell me nothing about the product other that it has no dust jacket or the dust jacket is tattered or is in very good condition.

What is the book about??? Absolutely nothing in regards to a synopsis.

I've gotten jerks at the gas station offering to pump gas for a quarter (like that is really work) and their attitude concerning life brings everyone with in a circular mile into a depression. I've told 'em "Find something to sell if you want to make money. And get a better attitude if you expect to sell anything."

They don't even realize that pumping gas could be considered a service and services are salable. But my giving them a quarter increases the cost of gas and people, myself included, are already ticked off about that. Who wants to pay more for gas?

Sad! Sad! Sad!

One of these booksellers added some information about the book and is asking twice as much for the book as the other fellow. Without the DustJacket! (DJ) Whereas the cheaper book has one. - Which will sell first? - I think the one that took the few extra keystrokes not the one with the DJ.

Personally I've never read a book on salesmanship but I have read a few DJ's. The DJ blurbs tell me all I need to know. - I've owned a few but sold them to people that needed them. - Salesmanship may or may not be a natural talent. I don't know. I do know that people without common sense will never have it...

Two Books - The Greening of America and Farewell To Eden

I know it has been a while since I've posted. I have 3 posts in 'draft mode' and have not been able to get back to them. This one I will finish by making it short and sweet. Tonight I finished packing the books in the house. Still have to move them out of the house but they are all in boxes now.

On the cover, in Bold Italics is states: "How the Youth Revolution is Trying to Make America Livable" -

As I read that I asked myself, "When was it unlivable in America?" Guess I missed it as did many others including the parents ot those 'youth revolutionaries' who must have been alive since they produced the little darlings.

Second question I asked, (By the way, I was there. I was a youth that survived the late 60's & early 70's) Back to the question. "What the hell did those invoved in the 'revolution' care about making America livable? All we wanted was sex, drugs and rock and roll!"

By Mathew Huxley and Cornell Capa, Harper & Row Publishers, 1964 (First Edition) -

No, this is not a Steinbeck novel. The dust jacket shows a picture of a near nude (a belt only), primitive man with a bone through his nose holding a stone age bow and arrow.

Excuse me?

Eden???

If I had to ground down rocks against one another to make arrowpoints in order to eat I would not consider it EDEN.

Hey buddy! Adam was kicked out of the garden and these people were part of the result. - The dustjacket blurb even mentions, "Casual practice of infanticide" for goodness sake.

This book is about one of the last (if not the last) stoneage tribes in Peru. I gathered from the title and picture that the author figured that mankind should have ignored these people whose dentistry consisted of having a kindly neighbor smack you in the jaw with a rock and hope the right tooth came out.

Further reading of the DJ blurb shows that the author is against society and plantation owners making slaves of these people. - That I will agree with...

I won't agree with the title however.

The Land of Little Rainby Mary Austin

For 1st time visitors I recently acquired a library - This posting is the first of many concerning it.

My slogan for this blog is "Digging a Little Deeper" and that is one thing I find myself doing as I prepare to list a book for auction on eBay.

Book collectors most often look for books that are in the best condition and closest to a first edition in the genre they collect. If they cannot afford a pristine first edition they may settle for a more handled and used first or second edition.

Sometimes they just buy a book to read it...

So what happens when you find a collectable book that was produced in more than one printing without having 'First Edition' stamped right on it? Just the copyright date and thats it. Nothing about first, second or third printing. Just one date.

I found one such book by Mary Austin. Land Of Little Rain. Dated 1903. A classic book on life and resources in the Owens Valley of California at the turn of the last century. Quite a good read which is why it has been reprinted so many times. I have another copy that is illustrated with Ansel Adams photographs. Much newer than the copy I'm writing about now.

Oftentimes I will list a book like this as "First Edition Assumed, Not Stated"

BUT ("There's always a big BUT" - PeeWee Herman)

My copy has only two colors printed on the cover and while researching it's value I found a "First Edition" with four colors on the front.

- - - HMMMM - - -

So I dug a little deeper - Was their's a "True First Edition" or mine?

I found that there was a second printing a few months after the first using the single date with a few subtle differences. The cover color, position of the words on the half title page & the gathering of the first set of colated pages. - So why is it my copy does not match either the first or second printing? It is like a hybrid.

Could it have been a pre-production copy? Either before or after the actual first or second printing? Perhaps the publisher was looking for ways to cut costs (Two colors on cover as opposed to four) and produced this book as a prototype. I don't know yet but I'm going to "Dig a Little Deeper" to try to find out.

Of course it is important to book collectors that they know what they are buying and it is important to my conscience that I not misrepresent something. Besides, I need to make sure that this copy I have is valued properly so I don't get cheated.

Scenario - Husband at computer reseaching on a book he has at hand. Wife comes in followed by The Cat Who Loves Her and they both sit at her computer on the other side of the wall of books. Cat, as usual demands her attention. We talk a bit as she opens up her email program....

Wifeypoo: "Something's wrong."

Me: "What?"

Wifeypoo: "Everything on my screen keeps flashing."

Me: Huh? - (Looks over at flashing email on screen) - "Try moving the sidebar up and...

The cat is sitting on your keyboard."

Wiferypoo: "Oh." - (Moves cat, waits a bit as commands the cat instigated settle down) "No wonder..."

prying1 sez: Sometimes they want commiseration. Other times they need an answer. Lord let me know how to tell the difference.

Where is prying1? He has a new life... Not to mention he has books

OK! It has been a few weeks since I've posted. I've been pretty busy. This is because of work and church and I bought A LIBRARY. Not just a run of the mill Library but one owned by a man that loved books just because they were books. - Just like me...

- Those of you who know me are used to religious/political postings. That is going to change a bit. I'll still occasionally get my digs in on idiots like Polosi and Harry Reed (and those who vote for them), just not as much. I'll still extol the benefits of meeting and knowing the Living God on a personal level. I'm going to be centering this blog on books. - There are many political blogs out there who are able to cover the issues much better than I. Trust me, I'm not changing my politics. Just the direction of my postings.

Dion O'Donnol, printer, poet and all around nice guy passed away at the tender age of 95 last February. I was fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time to acquire his library. Since he lived so long and his friends passed before him he had collected the personal libraries of at least two of his friends. So besides the books he collected during his life I now own the books of at least 2 other personal libraries. I'm sure there is more than two but that is all that could be verified by his kids.

This makes a total of 4 Personal Libraries counting my own!

The boxes above are all filled with books that have been packed for the move.

In the picture above there are three 4 foot books shelves empty. On the left side behind the stack of boxes. - These are (were) two double rows of 12 feet long by 8 feet high of book shelves. - Thats 24 feet! (I worked that one out by myself!) - Behind that are more bookshelves and a wall of boxes of books. To the right is a wall of shelves that extends another 8 feet. - This is just a portion because there are/were more inside Dion's house.

"What?" you ask, "Will you do with so many books?"

"Well!" I answer, "I hope to sell some on eBay and through Amazon. - Plus I'm going to set up my own website where I can list and catalog bunches of them. (Do books come in bunches? - I'll have to research that...)

What I really hope to do is find good homes for them where they will be appreciated.

That is, the books I do not want to keep for my Own Personal Library.

Today I Googled, "setting up your personal library" (with Quotes) and got three hits. - Not one of them addressed my need. So I changed 'your' to 'a', that is, "setting up a personal library" and got nine hits. - Again not one addressed my problem...

Well. I'll be doing a bit of research and figuring out what rules of engagement will work best for me with the space I have and I'll be blogging on it.

One good thing from this is that I'm going to be cleaning out my garage which is something that I've wanted to do but never 'made time' to do.

This blog will be changing a bit. More of it will be dedicated to books and such as opposed to the political shenanigans of our politicians. For example L.A.'s mayor who is a jerk. Many more issues are covered by others and I'll link to them occasionally. The Dead Sea Scrolls issue for example is covered by Charles Gadda here and here.

I'll be posting on some treasures I've found and giving heads up on what I'll be listing online.

I'll be giving some reviews of books long out of print. Amazing how many poets Google doesn't even register. Some for good reason no doubt. - Included will be some classics and even more little known and forgotten books. - Poetry, History, Novels, Fiction, Non-Fiction, Children's, Lost and Forgotten Authors, Book Trivia and Book Edition Mysteries. -

I'll try to keep the posts entertaining. - Wish me luck.

NBC's Substandard Bullet Proof Vest Accusations False???

Those who have been around for a while or perhaps study history a bit might remember or know of the "Flying Wing" and the interview Clete Roberts had with Jack Northrop.

In October of 1979, reporter Clete Roberts of Public Broadcasting System (PBS) station KCET-TV conducted an extraordinary interview with Jack Northrop, founder and former president of what was then the Northrop Corporation. In the filmed interview, it is clear that Mr. Northrop was not in good health: His appearance was frail, his eyes watery, and his voice broken. But his mind appeared sharp, and his memory seemed crystal clear. Led by Clete Roberts, Mr. Northrop told his story, clearly and forcefully, for what, he said, was the first time:

The same day that General McNarney[,] who was the chief -- the military chief -- of the Air Forces, came to my office with that additional order for thirty-five airplanes, which he said was a drop in the bucket as far as the ultimate order was concerned, Mr. Millar and I were requested to visit Mr. Symington (Air Force Secretary). At that meeting, he (Mr. Symington by context)...told us that he did not want to sponsor any new aircraft companies entering the business and having to be supplied with business over the years, and that he wanted us without question to merge with Consolidated Vultee, which was then operating a government-owned plant in Fort Worth, building the B-36, as a competitor to the B-35 or B-49 [Northrop's Flying Wing bombers].

After the lengthy diatribe on Mr. Symington's part, I said, "Mr. Secretary, what are the alternatives to this demand you're making of our merger with Consolidated Vultee?" He said, "Alternatives? You'll be goddamned sorry if you don't!"

The Northrop contract was canceled in 1949 but was it because of 'Public Servants' looking for kickbacks or that the 'government' at that time did not want to carry the burden of "cost, schedule, and technical performance." (page one of previous link)

Was Clete Roberts, a well known but faltering in his career News Talking Head at the time, just pushing a story that he knew would raise hackles? - It raised mine at the time... - In fact. My hackles are still raised over the issue. Having heard both sides of the issue I'm still more apt to believe that Symington had expectations of money through the deal...

Now we have a new issue raised by the MSM through one of it's major players NBC. - Substandard Body Armor. -

NBC accused our government, in particular the Pentagon of purchasing second best for our troops. - Now NBC stands accused of using faulty information in it's report. - Will NBC reply to the accusations or just hope people don't hear about the opposing viewpoint. perhaps they will hope people forget about it and just take the original report as gospel...

One way or the other I've made up my mind concerning the issue.

All I can say about the above linked article is that I would trust Warner Todd Huston more than I would NBC...

Monday Campaign Notes - 6/11/2007

Here it is Monday again, and my supporters are probably saying to themselves, "Didn't Cary say he would have this to me by Friday, so I could look it over before posting it?"

Well, yes, I did say that. I also said to a friend a while back that I thought I could handle being a Dad, involved in the church, work full time, AND campaign for president - never mind actually be president - without running into overtime.

Overtime has been run into. My apologies. Life has a habit of getting in the way of living sometimes, and for a working stiff like me that means that sometimes my goals have to be modified.

One goal I will not modify is that of getting the Career Politicians to pay attention to We the People. Last week, the Senate failed to pass the "comprehensive immigration reform" measure - or, as I like to call it, the "giving away what so many wait their turn for" measure - and President Bush has the gall to claim that he will "talk to the GOP members" who voted against the measure. Funny, but it seems to me that those who voted against the measure were doing something a lot of people on the Hill haven't been doing - they PAID ATTENTION TO THEIR CONSTITUENTS - you know, the people they supposedly "represent" - and decided that maybe the American People really don't want to give away the farm.

I have been accused of being against immigration. Quite the contrary, I am all for immigration - legal immigration, within the boundaries and quotas that are currently in place. I have been reminded (see the comments) that my ancestors were immigrants. I have reminded right back that they were LEGAL immigrants. Oh, and they were self sufficient, created value from the natural resources, provided employment for others, were involved in government, and generally added to the country, instead of taking away.

I say all of that to say this: I care very deeply for this country. I will not allow this country to be sold up the river, given away in an immigration scandal dressed up as "reform", or corrupted any more from within. It is time for We the People to once again wrest control of this nation away from those who are making their living from the political machinations of the Hill and hand it back to the general populace, where it can be safeguarded better than it has been.

Since being deployed to the Diyala province of Iraq in November 2006, Col. David Sutherland, along with brigade Chaplain Maj. Charlie Fenton, pictured on the right, has made it a point to visit every wounded soldier and say goodbye to each and everyone of his men who've lost their life. Four of his soldiers died on one day in April 2007 and the bad news arrived at his office in waves -- a knock on the door, a note handed in by an aide, heads bowed, knowing glances exchanged. Aides say Sutherland walks to the mortuary affairs tent at his base and embraces the dead bodies of his men. "I hug all my fallen soldiers", said Sutherland. "They are my own".

Diyala province is one of the worst places in Iraq. Public beheadings of Iraqi police, tribal wars, sectarian wars and al-Qaida. "I didn't come here thinking it'd be easy. No one told me, 'You're gonna get 9 hours of sleep a night and you're not gonna lose soldiers'. But I believe this is the place for me."

"As a soldier, I want to be here on the ground," he said. "As an American, I want it to end."

I received this e-mail from a close friend after he listened to the Political Pistachio Radio show from Saturday, June 2. Douglas Gibbs had invited me on as the primary guest. My friend (I'll call him "Toby") has some good points, and I will address them throughout:

Cary,

Thank you for your service to our country! I consider you a good friend and I want you to succeed!

Thank you, Toby. I'd like to succeed, also.

I agree with most everything you stand for because I'm a right-wing conservative through and through. I have, generally, just a few minor points of disagreement and they probably have to do with interpretation. I know you are serious about your concern for this country and your fellowman. But what I'm not sure about is your seriousness about being elected President in 2008. I think you enjoy the rhetoric, but not campaigning for the Presidency. And, it seems to me, you don't think or act in terms of one anticipating actually serving as the President. I hope I'm wrong.

Serious? I'm serious about getting attention paid to what We The People are trying to tell our so-called representatives. They don't seem to be listening, and if my campaign gets their attention, and they think about what they are doing to this country, then my job is finished. No, I don't enjoy campaigning - especially since I have a daughter I would rather be spending my free time with - but it is for her sake that I want this country to correct it's course back to the conservative roots it was founded on.

How does one act in anticipation of uprooting his family, living in two places, and trying to run the country when one's wife does not wish to travel? I am constantly struggling with what the future might bring. If I do end up in the Oval Office, what effect will it have on not just my family, but my church family? As you know, I'm involved in the leadership of the church - what will happen if I need to take a long break? How will the exposure affect my family and my church? Will the media dig into all the past details of everyone involved? They tend to have less compassion for past acts that have been forgiven than we as Christians do.

Let me ask a few hard questions that I think anyone who considers writing in your name on a ballot must ask-

How is voting for you not like throwing away my vote?

I can't guarantee that voting for me would not be throwing away your vote, anymore than voting for any of the candidates would be throwing away your vote. I know that voting for me would be taking votes away from career politicians, which is a good thing in the long run, but my hope is that enough dissatisfied people in both parties, the ones who have common sense, and don't like the direction the country is headed, will vote for me - and if that's enough to land me in DC, then so be it. God is in control, and places our leaders in position. Maybe this latest iteration of leadership is God's way of issuing a wake up call to this country - "See what happens when you don't pay attention?" I don't know.

Besides being a former Marine and running for President, what have you done and what are you doing that puts into action the things you stand for on a local, state or national level?

Locally - I don't use day labor. The majority of the day labor pool is in this country illegally. Yes, there are some legal residents who make themselves available through day labor, or Home Depot curb service, but I can't see taking that chance statistically. On a state level, I communicate with my representatives on the issues. On a National level, I have managed to get Ed Pastor to send me a note saying he wasn't going to respond to faxes that I have sent through a third party system - especially since he has made his position clear. So much for letting your "representatives" know how you feel. No, I didn't vote for him - but since he does "represent" my disctrict, shouldn't he know how I feel? I make my feelings known on my blog, http://www.itisobvious.blogspot.com (I'm Thinking of the "O" Word) and through comments left on other blogs.

How can you succeed when so many others (with training, experience and political clout) have failed?

Again, no guarantees. But, since I don't have the clout, I also am not subject to influence by major factors - corporations, money funds, whatever. I am an average working joe - and I think that my outlook on politics is pretty close to what the rest of the working nation is - that this country is not the first concern of the Career Politicians.

There they are. I believe when you have done a good job of answering these then you have something to offer the voting public that will cause them to hear you and consider you. I offer them only to assist you in your bid for the Presidency and not to discourage you.

Like I said before, Thank You - not only for believing in me, but for caring enough to give the feedback you have.

We all (me included) are great Monday morning quarterbacks, but the people who win games go in knowing what it takes to win. Lots of people know what's wrong (or at least think they do) - what "we the people" need is someone who not only has a plan to fix it, but can provide leadership on many levels and draw together not only friends of one's positions but enemies to them. I am unsure that it can be done without being able to understand and use politics to one's advantage - political savvy. Political savvy goes way beyond knowing the rules and the issues and certainly requires considerable experience.

You are absolutely correct - political savvy goes a long way - in the environment that is in place now. But like I asked on the program, Why don't WE THE PEOPLE know what it takes to run this country? Why the secrecy? Why the back-room dealings? Why can't the average concerned citizen step up and take part in the representative republic we call The United States of America? I think it needs to change back to being a government OF the people, BY the people, and most importantly FOR the people.

I'm not familiar with the general format, but I thought you weren't given enough time to make your major points.

I'll let Doug know. I'm sure he'd appreciate the feedback - but it is his show, and he loves to talk. That's why he has the show.

I also think I disagree with you on one fundamental point - once a society accepts law as having a place in that society the only thing that law can do is legislate what actions are acceptable in the legal sense - which is a form of morality. Law cannot by its very nature control one's thinking of murder or theft, but can only hope to curtail such socially unacceptable behavior by enforcement of restrictions and punishments. Crime may not necessarily be a sin, but our legal system is without a doubt based upon a view of the morality portrayed in the Bible.

Good point. There is also the philosophy of "societal legal agreement" - that is, once a set of rules has been agreed upon, with agreed upon consequences if said rules (or laws) have been breeched, then all in that society must abide by the same laws. If authority allows certain segments of the population to ignore the rules, or if a certain segment of the population does not receive the agreed upon punishment for not following the rules, then you have other segments of the population that will start testing which rules are enforced. Once this starts, then the segment of the population that has the moral backbone to continue to follow the rules in spite of them not being enforced will start to get very upset with authority - and either revolution or replacement is the next step.

I've been getting a few hits lately where people Google - "warriors for innocence" spyware and malware. -

One hit came from Australia.

IN NO WAY IS WARRIORS FOR INNOCENCE ASSOCIATED WITH SPYWARE!!!

Just thinking that there might be an email going around proclaiming Warriors For Innocence is bad news and for people to not go there. I don't really know. Just guessing. - If you have gotten to this site through a Google search like this I would appreciate a note in the comments as to why you typed "warriors for innocence" spyware/malware into Google. If there is an email I'd appreciate a forward.

Warriors For Innocence has recently struck a nerve with a segment of the population that does not appreciate what they stand for, or against rather.
Warriors is against childporn on the internet. Through their endeavors LiveJournal, owned by Six Apart Incorporated, deleted over 500 of its sites or journals that it deemed as portals for pedophilia, child sex, child abuse, and other illegal activities. They hope that other Journal and blog providers will soon follow suit.

Go to this posting on Warriors For Innocence and get the first hand story about what happened and be sure to read the comments wherein some of the people in this wonderful world show they are not happy with the results Warriors is achieving.

Pfc. Jeffries was killed with two fellow soldiers, Capt. Daniel W. Eggers and Sgt. 1st Class Robert J. Mogensen, and an unnamed sailor, when their vehicle drove over an IED in Kandahar, Afghanistan. All four service members were attached to the Combined Joint Special Operations Task Force – Afghanistan. He is survived by his wife, Betsy, and his parents Mark and Linda Jeffries.

These brave men and women sacrifice so much in their lives so that others may enjoy the freedoms we get to enjoy everyday. For that, I am proud to call them Hero.

Do People Like To Be Fooled?Al Gore Is On the Loose Again!

People love magicians. Yet ultimately what is it magicians do to people?

Answer: Fool them.

That is about it. People are fooled by magicians but in such a way that it (usually) brings delight. So much so that they will pay to see a good magic act. I'm sure there are very few people that would not enjoy meeting David Blaine on the street.

One of the synonyms of magician is conjurer. Note the first sylable of that word is "CON".

Dictionary.com has these definitions (among others) for the word "CON"

1. involving abuse of confidence: a con trick.
–verb (used with object)
2. to swindle; trick: That crook conned me out of all my savings.
3. to persuade by deception, cajolery, etc.
–noun
4. a confidence game or swindle.
5. a lie, exaggeration, or glib self-serving talk: He had a dozen different cons for getting out of paying traffic tickets.

Which brings me to the point of this posting. Some con artists (of the magician type) bring delight to people. Some of the crook and swindle type bring misery. Many a time we hear of someone having their life savings stolen from them through con artists. They are fooled into giving up whatever it is the con desires. Usually of monetary value.

Currently the talk show circuit has a con artist running amuck and a segment of our population is delighted with him. Al Gore is that person. This is in spite of it being shown and proven that he is a liar and a swindler. His purchasing so called 'carbon offsets' from himself should have given a clue to his devotees that they are being taken for a ride but NOOooo! They still dote on his every word.

His movie, An Inconvenient Truth has repeatedly been shown to be filled with fallacies yet he received an Academy Award for it. By all rights the award should be rescinded because the Academy does not give out awards for false documentaries.

Al Gore's new book, "The Assault on Reason" does the same as the movie did. It takes liberties with facts and presents them the way Al Gore wants us to see them. Slight of hand can be seen in the following lines from the book.

It is simply no longer possible to ignore the strangeness of our public discourse. I know I am not alone in feeling that something has gone fundamentally wrong. In 2001, I had hoped it was an aberration when polls showed that three-quarters of Americans believed that Saddam Hussein was responsible for attacking us on Sept. 11. More than five years later, however, nearly half of the American public still believes Saddam was connected to the attack.

This is nonsense and anyone who helps Al Gore by purchasing his book deserves to have their money stolen.

WAKE UP MR. ALGORE!!! Where did you get your numbers??? We know Sadamm did not have anything to do with the 9-11 attacks. We knew that at the time war against his government was debated in Congress. We also know that he harbored terrorists. This is not a war against Sadaam but against terrorists. Stop with the slight of hand!

The Height of Arrogance

If there is any doubt in your mind about who your "representatives" are really representing, watch the vote for cloture on the immigration bill today - or, as I like to call it, the "Unexclusive-ing of United States Citizenship" bill. That's right - just like in 1986, the "leaders" of this country feel that the only way to solve the illegal immigration issue is to make them all legal.

This would be similar to Brentwood Country Club allowing the course hoppers to become a members to avoid having a course-hopper problem, instead of firing up the course rangers and security personnel to keep the hoppers off the course in the first place.

When Reagan signed the first amnesty bill in 1986, he had the assurances of all involved that enforcement would be forthcoming. Oddly enough, the Career Politicians who gave him (and, by extension, the country) that impression lied through their teeth. I know, it's shocking to find out that people who make a habit of misleading the voting public would turn around and not tell the truth on any other subject, but there you have it. At any rate, the enforcement sections never materialized - with the result that today, nearly three times the number of illegal invaders will be handed citizenship if this bill passes. Ladies and Gentlemen of the United States, it is time to wrest control away from the self-serving spoiled millionaires running the country for their own amusement and hand it back to We the People. It is time for the citizens of this country to stand up and be counted, to let the "leaders" know that they are not representing the majority will of those they owe their position to - and I am not referring to the political string-pullers with deep pockets.

I am running a write-in campaign for President of the United States. If all I do is piss off the incumbent, lazy, good-for-nothing Career Politicians, then so be it - but I want to make sure these same representatives know that it is not just my voice alone - that there is, indeed, a majority of citizens who want their country to remain sovereign.

S.C. Republicans cheer Romney as he attacks immigration bill

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- The crowd at South Carolina's Republican convention cheered Saturday when former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney criticized a new immigration proposal and booed a key ally of U.S. Sen. John McCain when he defended it.

They cheered as presidential candidate Romney told them: "One simple rule: No amnesty."

The crowd booed South Carolina U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham, a key ally of McCain in both his 2000 and 2008 presidential bids, when he said he had worked with U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass., on the immigration legislation.

"It's the best bill I think we can get to President Bush," Graham said as some in the crowd shouted "No!"

Graham was cheered earlier in his speech when he talked about the war in Iraq.

After the speech, Graham said he was booed on immigration because "it's an emotional topic. People are mad."

Wrong South Carolina U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham! People are not mad. They are filled with righteous indignation!!!

Your's is one name I will remember if it ever comes up on a ballot before me. As will McCain's.

Build the Fence First!

Once again we have the U.S. government in "do something even if it is wrong" mode.

At least that is what Presidential hopeful McCain seemed to say in his comments about the "New" immigration package.

This is the first step. We can and must complete this legislation sooner rather than later. We all know that this issue can be caught up in extracurricular politics unless we move forward as quickly as opssible. This is a product of a long hard trail of negotiation, and I am sure that there are certain provisions that each of us would not agree with, but this is what the legislative process is all about, this is what bipartisanship is all about when there is a requirement for this nation and its security that transcends party lines. I am proud to have been a small part of it.

Hugh Hewitt has translated this little political diatribe for those of us who do not understand the double tounged finesse with which McCain speaks.

Deal's done. I am the guy. I made it happen. My opinion mattered, not yours. What I do in the middle of a campaign for president has nothing to do with politics. My critics are all motivated by politics. Since I have already made up my mind, no debate is necessary, so shut up. Republicans especially shut up. This is how things get done in D.C.: You roll over for Democrats. And by the way, cutting half the fence and leaving the other half subject to the whims of the anti-border security bureaucracy equals protecting national security, just like the Gang of 14 was good for the confirmation process and McCain-Feingold good for the First Amendment. So, if you didn't hear me the first time: Shut up. Sit down. I'm your nominee.

I'm John McCain and I approved of this message.

"I strongly oppose today's bill going through the Senate. It is the wrong approach. Any legislation that allows illegal immigrants to stay in the country indefinitely, as the new 'Z-Visa' does, is a form of amnesty. That is unfair to the millions of people who have applied to legally immigrate to the U.S.

"Today's Senate agreement falls short of the actions needed to both solve our country's illegal immigration problem and also strengthen our legal immigration system. Border security and a reliable employment verification system must be our first priority."

This "New" Immigration bill currently being pushed offers amnesty to 12 to 20 million people who broke the laws to get into this country. We are being told that it is not amnesty but by all definitions it is. It demands that those who came here illegally must go home for a year and then come back legally.

Yeah! Right!

The current crop of illegal aliens will not fall for that one. They most likely will cheat any which way they can (They are already lawbreakers). They will have their cousin back home verifying their compliance while they are still working at Swifts or gardening our lawns. False papers, forged documents, bribed officials etc. will be the first order of the day.

Plus this new bill cuts down the length of the fence already promised.

The wording of the complete bill has not even been finished and by the time it is 1000 pages will be produced. It has been arranged that too little time will be left for anyone to go through it and voice objections before they vote on it.

This is not a very good example of a representative government but it is typical of the current batch of "elected representatives".

prying1 sez: Our elected officials have yet to prove they have the will to enforce our current laws concerning illegal aliens. Why should we believe they will enforce this new legislation that President Bush has promised to sign?

Call 202-225-3121 and ask for the offices of Mitch McConnell, Trent Lott or Jon Kyl, the three leaders of the GOP in the upper chamber.
