More On the Birds and the Poor

My previous posting linking to Quantum Thought's post, "The Enigma of The Bird Feeders." did not bring in any responses. I was figuring at least a couple liberals would complain about the story and say that Norm and myself were heartless and cruel for thinking ill of the poor.

None did.

It was not thinking ill of the poor for Norm to write his story. It really tells of how misguided enablers will draw to themselves those that are users.

I like Norm's story because I've seen it in action. Although his story is fiction it had a major element of true/real life in it.

I wrote to Norm and he included my comment in his posting.

Did I mention I like the story? - I've seen it happen through our church at one time. FREE FOOD! was the cry. Until we started demanding a bit of work through painting, gardening etc...

Hey! Where did the poor people go???

Here, in this posting, I write my remembrance from the 80's of what was behind that comment.

A mile from our church is a park that had become a hangout for "Urban Campers". Some might call them homeless. A few people from our church decided to do something for these poor folks so one Saturday they dragged a couple bar-b-ques down there and set up a huge picnic for them.

Huge success.

These folks were so grateful for the delicious meal and were very friendly and quite a few were receptive to the Word of God that these good Christians were sharing with them. All were invited to the church the following day.

The following day (Sunday) none of them made it the mile away to the church service perhaps because they didn't know where the church was or felt they would be out of place amongst all them 'fine church folks'.

The following Saturday with each meal served assurances were given they would be welcome to come to the church service the following day. Perhaps connections could be made for jobs etc...

None showed up.

~~~~~~~
However, during the following week quite a few people come by asking for help. They really needed/wanted money but seemed satisfied to take a bag of groceries each. The next week even more came for 'help'.
I believe it was a Wdnesday that one man came by as Mitch, our church custodian, was finishing up some gardening. He was approached by this man who asked if there was somthing that the church could do for his predicament.
Homeless and hungry...
Mitch said the man would have to wait a bit while he finished what he was doing. As Mitch coiled hoses and put away the gardening equipment the man sat and patiently waited. He was so patient he did not feel the need to hurry Mitch up in his work by lending a hand. He just patiently waited for Mitch to finish.
After the gardening tools were put away Mitch led the man to a paint shed and explained that the church would be happy to give him food and some pay if he would help with just a bit of painting.
The man got irate and after a few choice words that sailors use normally outside of earshot of ladies he left without getting a bag of groceries.
The word must have spread pretty quickly because the beautiful people requesting help from out little church thinned out to nothing in two days time. None would lift their hand to paint or garden. None showed up for the next Sunday service either...
prying1 sez: I am not against charity and I'm pretty sure Norm is not either. What I am against is enabling people asking for handouts so they don't have to work. I could write more on this but I think this posting along with that of Quantum Thought's is 'nuff said'...
Poor People and Birds
Is There A Relationship?
Quantum Thought Gives Food For Thought
A PRY exclusive!
Well, Maybe not too exclusive. Norm Weatherby posted this and I thought I'd lead you to it. Norm does not have comments on his site so if you want to put your two cents worth in you may do so here. - Keep it clean folks - This is a family friendly blogsite...
"The Enigma of The Bird Feeders."
There is an interesting comparison between feeding the poor and feeding birds.
Our friend "Charlie Good Guy" moves into a house with a bird feeder and lots of trees. He notices the feeder is empty and there are few birds around. He fills the feeder and many birds come. Too many. Eventually they start fighting each other for food. Naturally Charlie, being a good guy, buys another feeder. Problem, there are now a lot more birds and many more fights.
Alarmed Charlie buys ten more bird feeders to handle all the "obviously starving birds" in his treed lot.
More John Kerry Humor
Charlotte of A Day In The Life Of....... posted this jewel she got from a BB she frequents. I recommend visiting Charlotte, an Army Mom, and let her know you appreciate her and her's by leaving a comment.
DEAR SENATOR KERRY:
WE ARE STILL LAUGHING OVER HERE IN IRAQ AT YOUR JOKE ABOUT THE TROOPS BEING DUMB. WE DO RECOGNIZE THAT YOU ARE A LOT SMARTER THAN WE ARE BECAUSE YOU WERE ABLE TO GET OUT OF COMBAT IN THREE MONTHS. THIS IS WHY WE ARE SEEKING YOUR ADVICE. PLEASE GIVE US GUIDANCE.
1.) WHERE IS THE LEAST PAINFUL AREA ON THE BODY TO INFLICT A WOUND?
2.) DOES IT HAVE TO BLEED OR WILL A SCRATCH DO?
3.) WHERE DO YOU GET THE FORMS TO FILL OUT RECOMMENDING YOURSELF FOR A PURPLE HEART?
4.) DO YOU NEED A WITNESS? IF SO, HOW MUCH DOES THAT COST?
5.) ARE THREE PURPLE HEARTS STILL GOOD FOR A TRIP HOME?
6.) WHAT IS A REALISTIC PERIOD OF TIME IN WHICH TO ACQUIRE THESE WOUNDS? LESS THAN THREE MONTHS SOUNDS A LITTLE SUSPICIOUS EVEN TO US.
THANKS FOR YOUR HELP AND KEEP THE JOKES COMING.
JUST A DUMB G.I.
prying1 sez: Keep the jokes coming folks. Most libs won't get 'em so it'll keep 'em confused until the next election cycle.
Elections Are Just About Over
So now we can spend the next two years prepping America for the next round.
A quick view of some headlines:
~~~~~

U.S. stock futures down as Democrats take control

"The Democrats are known to be less business friendly than the Republicans and there will be less decision making coming out of the U.S. government for the next two years. It's that simple," said Geoff Langham, head of trading for CMC Markets in London.

Courts Weigh In After Voting Difficulties Emerge at the Polls

Courts had to extend some voting times in various locations. First people are yelling to get the machines and then are screaming when they have problems. Some times you can't win.

Also: Electronic Voting Machine Headaches Shut Out Citizens -

~~~~~~
Poll worker charged with assaulting voter
The incident happened about 10:30 a.m. when the poll worker wouldn’t process the voter’s ballot because he had not cast votes for the judge elections, Yates said.
The voter, William Miller, apparently cast a ballot that did not go through the voting machine, Yates said.
When Steitz, who was being paid to work the election and assist voters, looked at the rejected ballot, he told Miller it didn’t go through because he’d left all the judge elections blank.
After Miller insisted that he did not have to vote for the judges, Steitz allegedly assaulted him, Yates said. (Voters can cast ballots in any or all of the races, as they see fit.)
Steitz is accused of choking Miller and then pushing him out of the polling place, said Paula McCraney, a spokeswoman for the Jefferson County Clerk.
At this point it may be the House and the Senate have both been won by Democrats. Virginia may be up for a recount which will take time. - They apparently do not have the power to override any vetoes the President may utilize.
~~~~~

I will finish this posting with this link to/story from Dean Barnett's posting on HughHewitt.townhall.com entitled

Heartbreaking -

This will break your heart. It’s a Weekly Standard report by Santino Bunch detailing the harassment Michael Steele took at his polling place.

Standing in line to vote with his wife, the pair wearing matching blue Under Armour windbreakers, Steele was surrounded by folks who clearly had no desire to vote for him. They made snide comments behind his back. "They're just trying to trick us, but we know better," exclaimed one elderly woman. She went on to explain that Steele's great "trick" was not cutting to the front, but instead choosing to stand in line like everyone else.

For 45 minutes, Steele was waiting in line, listening to the jibes, biting his tongue, and smiling bravely. If not for his resolve, it would have been a depressing sight--the capacity some of us have to be rude to strangers is remarkable. Michael Steele deserved better.

I don’t understand. I always thought liberals were supposed to be nice and considerate.

~~~~~~~
prying1 sez:
I don't understand it either Dean. They say they are...
~~~~~

One last thing. It appears that in spite of all else most Americans believe the word "Marraige" should be reserved for one man, one woman...

Open Letter to Snopes.com

I have Google as my home page. On my homepage I have a line I can click that says, "Add Stuff". One of the things I have added is Snopes.com - The Home page for Urban Legends. - Don't be fooled by pale imitations. Snopes is the best.

Today my Google homepage had a new listing for Snopes.

I saw this view of a Shuttle Launch when I clicked it:

~~AND~~

(Click pics or title above for Snopes page on this.)

Apparently I missed the email as it was going around that said photos were taken from the International Space Station. Snopes corrects it and says they were taken by NASA/JSC WB-57 High Altitude Research aircraft.

Who needs errant emails anymore?

I sent a comment through Barbara and David P. Mikkelson's website with the following message:

I know I've said this before but I'm guessing you don't get tired of hearing it. Just thought I'd let you know that your site is the greatest.

Just saw the space shuttle launch pictures. I didn't get them in my emails. Don't need to now and I'm thinking that people don't need to forward emails anymore. Just send a link to your site. - Thanks -

Suicide Bomber and a College President

The Democracy Project asks if this is appropriate. Pictured above is University of Pennsylvania president Amy Gutmann with Saad Saadi - a student of her college.

The Democracy Project stated: (Quote) University of Pennsylvania president Amy Gutmann threw her annual Halloween costume party at her home Tuesday night. Among the guests was Saad Saadi, who came dressed as a suicide bomber, complete with plastic dynamite strapped to his chest and a toy automatic rifle. Worse, Gutmann posed with Saadi!

An obvious question: would Gutmann have posed with a guest--or even allowed him into her house--if he'd dressed as Adolf Hitler or a Nazi SS officer? A KKK member? (End quote)

Pictures once posted on Saad Saadi's website have been taken down. But you know how the internet is. The originals can be seen at the above linked website.

Saad, when he removed the pictures from his website placed this disclaimer in it's place, (Quote) - "My friend, Jason, and I express our condolences and sympathy to all offended by our costumes. We wish to make it clear that we do not support terrorism, violence, or anything that is against society. There is no agenda or statement associated with our behavior shown in these pictures. The costumes are meant to portray scary characters much like many other costumes on Halloween. We are deeply sorry for anyone who has been hurt or upset. Additionally, we strive for all societies to instill healthy non-violent values." (End quote)

Digging around Saad's website he links to this Google page of videos Saad Saadi has uploaded. Some of the videos really show him striving real hard to instill healthy non-violent values.

Amy Gutman posted a statement: (quote) "Each year, the president hosts a Halloween party for Penn students. More than 700 students attend. They all crowd around to have their picture taken with me in costume. This year, one student who had a toy gun in hand had his picture taken with me before it was obvious to me that he was dressed as a suicide bomber. He posted the photo on a website and it was picked up on several other websites.

The costume is clearly offensive and I was offended by it. As soon as I realized what his costume was, I refused to take any more pictures with him, as he requested. The student had the right to wear the costume just as I, and others, have a right to criticize his wearing of it." (End quote)

Prying1 sez: I think this is disgusting but typical of the left. Looking at the pictures shows that at least some of these kids think this is funny. One of the videos Saad uploaded shows their total disdain for President Bush but it also shows that he has a lot of growing up to do. I expect college students to do stupid things. The videos show that. I do have to wonder how true Amy Gutmans statement is re: her not realizing Saad was dressed as a suicide bomber. For some reason I have a lot of doubt that is true.
